First-run Marvel shows heading to Netflix

In a surprising move Disney has further backed Netflix with a line-up of brand new series based on several Marvel properties starting in 2015. The shows will feature Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist culminating in a Heroes for Hire styled "Defenders" mini-series. (My guess is that Heroes for Hire doesn't invoke the heroism they want, which is funny since the 90's Heroes for Hire was going to be named Defenders.) All the characters have close association in comics so this line-up will probably flow well from one series to the next. This will is also important since it will be the first time "street-level" characters are featured in a Marvel Studio production.

This follows on the heels of Disney announcing last year that Netflix will be exclusive streaming carrier of all it's productions which now includes Lucasfilm.

I developed the biggest grin in my entire life with these news.....also I DEMAND that Luke Cage says "Sweet Christmas!" at least once!:castlerock:

This is going to be amazing, these heroes will work perfectly on television because they don't need giant budgets to work

Marvel rocks.

1. Who the hell is Jessica Jones?
2. Does anyone even like Cage and Ironfist?
3. So Netflix is into doing tv series now? I bet they have a budge of $1 an episode.

1. She was the star of Alias by Bendis and is currently the wife of Luke Cage.
2. I have a soft spot for Luke and they have gotten a serious bump is notoriety since being featured on Ultimate Spider-Man. Also by the time the shows are out the Ultimate Spider-Man will be older and I guess the hope is that they will follow the characters. Wouldn't be shocked if White Tiger appears at some point, too.
3. Actually Netflix has had success with original programing recently with the new season of Arrested Development. Also I imagine there is set-up similar with network television were the broadcaster offsets some cost but it more or less falls to production company.
