I promise you this: When I am a big name filmmaker, I will produce one serious, adult oriented Toku show.

That sounds promising but dont forget your fundamentals when it comes to good toku. I dont know about you guys but I dont like the overly serious and adult oriented Toku. To me good Toku is when I cheer for the good guys and fear the bad guys. Good toku is well written stories that leave a memorable impression in my mind. Like Dekaranger, they dont have to advance the plot but as long as they have a good plot going on within each episode it's good. I dont need sex, drugs, and rock&roll to make me like Toku. I dont need blood, cursing, and bad ass heroes who are too mentally unstable to be a hero.

I like heroes like Tachibana Garren. He's a hero. I like heroes like Hibiki where you actually feel safe with him. He's got a cool head, cool attitude, and does what's right. He's a man. I want my toku to have exciting and important action where I'm cheering when the music cues up and the good guys have their weapons drawn and their arm raised high for great justice.

I just hope you remember the fundamentals of Toku before you try and make it serious and "adult" oriented. Gravion is NOT a good anime. It did not have the fundamentals that MADE Giant Robot/Team/MonsterOfTheDay stories good. The formula it was trying to pull off failed because they didnt stick to the fundamentals of what made it good. I hated Gravion. Im just giving an example.

The hero doesnt always have to win. But he should win the first battles to show people that he is a capable hero and one you should cheer for. To make you care about the hero when he does fall.

ok I rambled, sorry.

Nexus wasn't as clear cut as any Toky I'd ever seen and it worked great. It all depends on how it's done.

And I didnt like Nexus that much. It depends on how it's done and the personal preferance of the viewer. Personally, I like the real heroes. Nexus is good in some areas but what I dont like that the battles are too few and often not very exciting. Because Ultraman is usually losing. I feel a good Toku show is one with a powerful hero that people can get behind and feel safe with. A hero that actually wins his first few battles before having any trouble.

Too much focus on seriousness can ruin that feeling if done wrong. It's why so many fan fics about Toku or PR are just boring as sin to read. It's nothing but Sex, Cursing, and serious enemies who give us the same song and dance over and over. It becomes nothing more than the battle at hand. "how will the hero defeat this new foe??" It should be more than that. It should be about the good times AND the bad times. You cant care about the hero if you dont see some of the good moments in his life. If you cant laugh with your hero then you cant cry when he's about to die or does die. You never got to know him emotionally. This is the problem with some fan writings I see.

Im just saying seriousness and adult themes dont make a good Toku. Good writing does. If Vengeance ever makes it I hope he keeps that with him. :198:

And I thought Nexus had good writing, from what I've seen...most Ultramen usually get their ass pounded on until about 10 seconds before they draw power out of nowhere and win.

What I really liked about Nexus was the lack of city battles so by the time the one and only city battle came at the end...it actually felt like something big. I guess Nexus was different because the carrier wasn't actually the main character, it was all being told from Komon's POV. But I liked what it was able to do, some people say it was boring, but Nexus I think is one of the only Toku that could pass as 'serious' that I've ever seen. The characters were all realistic, maybe not Ren but he was always happy even though he knew what was coming for him. It wasn't "OMFG!!11one The Angst!" the characters all seemed real and you ended up caring about all of them.

LOL I agree. I do like the characters and the little plots revolving around Komon. Some pretty sad stuff towards the middle

Ahh, see Grn, if there's one thing I understand, it's how to actually make something serious. It's not by trying to be serious, its by finding the right mix between humor and drama. If you just force darkness and drama on your characters, the show is just lame.
