[DnD]Tieflings? Honestly? Tieflings?

So, I've been reading up on the new 4th Edition of DnD and all the changes they have planned for it. Among one of the oddest and, quite frankly, the dumbest changes is removing the Gnomes and replacing them with the Tiefling. Yeah thats right. Replacing this:

with this:

Now, my biggest question is: Why? Whats the point? Why tiefling? at the least wouldn't an Aasimar work better, being good aligned and all.

Are they goig towards the whole emo crowd now? There is no sense in it. Can anyone help me make sense in this at all?

EDIT: Sorry, for those of you who don't know. Tieflings are planetouched with an evil alignment (basically the GREEEAT GREEEAT grandchild of a Human/Fiend relationship, where as Aasimar are the GREEAT GREEAT grandchild of a Human/Celestial relationship.)

Yeah, I'm not a big fan either. They're also dragging Dragonborn into the 4th edition PHB. I declare shenanigans on this.

I do like that they're splitting elves into Elves (woodsy nature kids very similar in outlook to fey) and Eladrin (elf-like poeple who love magic and civilization). But yeah, I want gnomes, if at least to have someone to punt into battle!

Well, their still in the game, but they will be a monster race, similar to Goblins.

Also they are doing right by me by making Devils fallen Angels.

But pulling out the Gnomes, and then taking out Monks, Bards, and Sorcerers? its just stupid.

I'm going to make a good guess and say that it has to do with their new target audience, which is to say the young, generally uncreative crowd of young teens and pre-teens that have never read anything more challenging than Harry Potter and Naruto manga.

I imagine that many unseasoned players out there see gnomes and go "LOL WTF DIS IS TEH STOOPID." The values of good storytelling, weaving plots and genuinely interesting characters is something that seems to have been lost with the coming of the big anime craze and Japanese video games (among other things). Everything needs to be "dark" nowadays I guess.

I figured all those kids don't even give two craps about pen & paper stuff and choose to play World of Warcraft instead.

You can find all the role playing action in Goldshire 24hrs a day!

which, with the new online dnd stuff, might as well be what they are doing with the new edition: making it DND: WoW Edition.

I think its more a case of appealing to the 'kewl kidz' that don't want to play no stinking gnomes.

And I'll be saving some cash by not buying any of this crap sounds like.

I dunno, a lot of the stuff that I've seen for 4th edition looks pretty interesting - in a good way. For me, it looks like it'll be much the same as the change to 4th edition shadowrun. It changed the game entirely to the point that it pissed a lot of people off about all the changes that were made. But... if you took it on its own, it was still one damn good game with an extremely clean system. WotC looks like they're doing something much the same. If you want to keep playing the same game, stick with 3.5. There'll be another system out there for a different kind of game play and a slightly different kind of game, if you want to tell stories in that too.

I plan on picking up the 4th edition core books, but my gaming group will probably stick with 3.5 for a few more years.
