[Discussion] Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (170 Million Years In The Making)

When The Fruit Of Life Corrupts Men
Even though we're only up to episode 19 so far, this show is turning out wonderfully

It's very easy to see why Saban decided to go with this (aside from the fact that kids are wild about dinos)

It is really lucky that this got picked up by Saban for Power Rangers instead of Bioman or Jetman. No disrespect, I haven't finished either and I've heard nothing but good, but this was the first to have a sixth permanent ranger, which tend to be story jump-starters, which immediately rocketed PR from entertaining to cultural phenomenon.

...Not to say that Zyuranger isn't any more amazing. Even beside the 6th Ranger, a lot of things were done here that had never been done before. While some Sentai had mystical sources of power, Zyuranger was the first to have a purely fantastical setting and atmosphere. And even though Bioman did the 'Living Mecha' thing before, they had never been able to talk before now. Whether you love or hate it, there is no denying the profound and revolutionary impact it had on Super Sentai.

BTW, I'm watching TV-Nihon's subs, so I'm only up to ep. 15, but I might switch to G.U.I.S. if they get far enough ahead.

They are at episode 19, and will release 1 episode a week. Why would you wait around for T-N subs? You have kick ass people like Meganon, Lynxara, and kou aidou working on this at GUIS. Their works just rocks.

Anyway. Zyuranger is an amazing sentai. I will never understand the hate it gets. I will also never understand the people that say things like "MMPR made zyu better".

I'm watching there Liveman subs right now, and I agree they're good. Mostly I've got so many other shows I'm watching right now and other things on my plate I don't have the time.

But yeah, while I love MMPR, Zyuranger is just as cool.

I think MMPR is one, if not the only reason Zyuranger is even remembered. This isn't to say it is horrible, nor that there weren't any good ideas, but there's not much there. While the cast isn't bad, their characters are dull and little focused on. Most of the time when the plot does move, it focuses on Burai and Geki. We never learn much about the ancient civilization beyond very brief references. (For example I though the one episode with Goushi and the artist was a real missed opportunity to have a callback to someone he knew from the old days, rather than someone modern-day guy he met off-screen.) And the show in general is full of weird moments. Compare it to Dairanger, which had the same writer but was full of overarching plots with interludes every now and again.

Its strongest point I would say is its action. Zyuranger is one of the few shows that uses sparks when combatants are shot or slashed in almost every battle. (In many previous shows sparks didn't often fly out when someone got slashed.) Plus the mecha battles were among the best in Sentai. The robots move faster than is the norm and long fights were more common.

And even though Bioman did the 'Living Mecha' thing before, they had never been able to talk before now.

SunVulcan Robo spoke too, and it was purely tech-based.

Oh really. I didn't know that. Well still, Zyuranger was pretty revolutionary for its fantasy-based themes and motifs.

I will agree that most of the cast is pretty blah, especially Dan and Boi, but I think Mei is an example of a Yamato Nadeshiko done well. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but this was the first series the writers had done themselves, so it's good for what it is.

To be honest, I prefer Nihon because of the fonts they use for their subs. I just love the graphics and colors they use. I also wished they would go back and redo Blade, Hibiki, and Kabuto using the DVDs as source materials and encoding them so my BD players can read them, because right now, they can't.

I wish GUIS would do batch torrents of Jetman though.

Anyway, I like ZyuRanger. It isn't the greatest Sentai ever, it suffers from "random poorly acting child in distress of the week" syndrome like Kamen Rider Black does, but it is still a solid show. The designs are well done, some of the fights really rock, and of course, Dragon Ranger kicks ass. The music is quite good to.

it focuses on Burai and Geki.

You could say the same about any Sentai though. Jetman mostly focuses on Red Hawk, Liveman was mostly on Red Falcon, DaiRanger was on RyuuRanger, MegaRed, GingaRed, TimeRed and TimeFire, GekiRed and Rio, BoukenRed, GokaiRed and Basco, GoRed, etc. There may be usually be between 3-5 members, but the red rangers are and will always be the main focus of the show. That is also why the red ranger Figuarts are really the only ones that are easily accessible.
