Densha Otoko - Funny Japanese Tv Show (review)

ue chou kimo no imi wa nan desu ka?
"Ue chou kimoi" is slang for "ue chou kimochi warui", loosely translated as "beurk, how disgusting".
... otaku aren't exactly popular among women, as you might have guessed :confused2

Another thing my gf pointed out to me is that she doesn't think so highly of the acting performances of the lead female character (Hermes/Saori), but she did like the performance of the actress playing Jinkama. The reason? It's easy to play the 'nice' girl, but playing the bitch and being able to switch to a pseudo-nice girl in a flash takes more talent.

Yeah, that's why I said I blame the writers, because I know that Itoh Misaki is a lot better than that, but the writers gave her a one-dimensional character so I can't blame her personally. She's done a lot better roles that were much more interesting. Yeah Shiraishi Miho was great as Jinkama. Sato Eriko was good at times too.

It's funny that they're allowed to obsess over Yon-sama, but us having obsessions is gross, huh? :)

Eh. I was using him as a general example. I tend to have a huge problem with people superficial enough to think someone is disgusting just because they might like anime or toku or something.

Thank god I found my girlfriend.

Well, in their eyes there's a world of difference between obsessing about Yon-sama and obsessing about anime/toku:
- Yon-sama embodies their youthful love, a 'real' feeling so to speak.
- anime girls and the like are purely fictional character, hence 'falling in love with them' is considered sick.

I didn't understand at first as well but when I see how far gone some Japanese otaku are, I'm starting to understand women's feelings towards them. I've seen TV programs about them and some otaku go so far as to come out of the closet and saying things like:
"I went to that park with my gf and we had a picnic. She said she loved me but I told her I liked another girl more. Still, she kept hanging around me and we made love but finally we broke up. Now I'm dating the other girl and she's expecting my baby" ... keep in mind that the girls he was talking about were all fictional anime characters :redface2:

It's not so much the obsessing but the object of the obsession that bothers girls (the reality check issue, so to speak), I think.
My gf can easily accept I watch shows like Kamen Rider or Transformers. She even doesn't mind I collect Saint Seiya Myth Cloth figures. Hell, we even watch Chibi Maruko-chan together ... but buying a figure of an anime character in bathing suit would be crossing the line (see the difference here?)

Another thing they dislike about Otaku is not their passion but their behavior: they use their proper slang (usually old words nobody uses anymore like 'moe' as seen in Densha Otoko) and they are unable to talk as an adult even for 5 minutes to women (remember the otaku geek doing his 'turtle joke'?).

So it's not so much the fact that they're passionate about something, but rather their disconnection to the real world and unability to deal with real people and real feelings that bothers girls.

A common mistake girls in Japan often make is jump to straight to the final conclusion=
Guy likes anime/toku => he be otaku => he can't deal with real feelings and is disconnected from reality => "ue tte kanji!".
That's also the reason why I don't come out of the closet about my liking some Japanese TV shows, for fear of being mistaken for an otaku (which I'm not)

I never saw what was so great about it...the guy just looks...normal.
+1 (but try explaining that to my gf!)

Well there's a difference in having a passion for something and being cut off from the real world. Depends on what level of Otaku you are I guess, some are just rude bitches that act like snobs to anyone...others are actually pretty okay.

But I've heard of cases gone as far as a guy building up a story of a girlfriend to his parents. He tells them how perfect she is and how they'll be in love for the rest of their lives and that he wants them to meet each other. By the time that happens...it's some anime girl.

Really, people like that are the ones that need the most help. I'd call myself an Otaku, I like anime a LOT, I like manga a LOT more, I know more than the average fan would know. But I still have a life, I have a girlfriend, I have a job, go to school with okay grades. There's nothing wrong with that. My girlfriend knows why I like this stuff and I've even had a chance to get her into certain anime like NGE and stuff. But that's it, I don't let it take over my life, if I wanna go to a con or something, I talk to her about it and if she has something coming up that she needs me for then... girlfriend>hobby any day.

Of course most of the other disconnects aren't like that. They quit their job, school, lose most friends, move back in with their family all so they can keep their hobby going.

I had some thoughts on this first ep after it had a couple days to sink in, and I ended up stopping downloading the series and deleting all of the files. You see, from everything I've heard, all Otaku means is "geek." I know, it has some terrible connotation in Japan, but from what I've seen of said terrible connotation, all THAT is is the same **** we get here for liking the stuff we do. The fact that this show, which is based on a real story, feels the need to force stereotypes on everyone instead of actually telling the story is a little rediculous.

The best example is all of the scenes on the forum...the posts made are all posts anyone here would make. Except, I'm not currently in full camo gear screaming things at the screen while I type. I dunno, maybe the series gets better, but I don't like watching a show where I'm the butt of all of the jokes.

Although it did my heart good that most of the dumb blonde girls in my japanese class have apparently grown up since high school...the main otaku characters were more cute and lovable to them than disgusting.

Bullcrap. You're here, and you're an Otaku bro. Did you ever think that maybe those shows you've seen about them were maybe, just maybe, misrepresenting people to further a stereotype? Hmm?

God, people like this frustrate me to no end. There's no bloody difference between pining over a fictional character and pining over Yon-sama. It's just as bad. You know why? Because she's never MET Yonny boy. She never will. She likes the fictional character she sees on TV, not the real person. How on earth is that any different from liking a fictional character who happens to be animated? Like I said, it's both ludicrous.

You and I are lucky in that we both have girlfriends, me more so in that mine's actually willing to accept me for who I am. But as for those other Otaku out there, don't you think it'd be a little better to support them rather than say over and over "I'm not one of them! I'M NOT ONE OF THEM!"?

Densha Otoko doesn't misrepresent the Otaku community. Sure, they exaggerate some aspects to make it funnier, but at the core is a good realistic view on the behavior of Otaku and how they are percieved by Japanese society.

Like I wrote in another post, I don't want to cry off the rooftops that I'm an asocial super nerd with weird sexual tastes (see my other post: answers to Densha Otoko), hence I shunt the Otaku label as much as the plague.

From a girl's perspective, there's a world of difference between being infatuated with a TV personality based on 'real world feelings' (not the character is real, but the feelings he or she represents come fromt he real world), compared to honest to God believing you're dating this or that anime character (which, IMHO is indeed totally whack).

Sorry but no, I won't jump into the breach for Otaku and be dragged down with them into a bottomless pit.
