MOD NOTE: Check the idiotic "which fansub group is better" chatter, right now. Not what this thread is for, and I'd like to discuss this without it degenerating.

You know what boggles my mind? How HARD is it, really, to post a non-spoiler version of the exact thing you're trying to discuss?

Let's say that a character named Tom dies at the end of a series called, I don't know, Chair Wars.

You can post: "Just got done watching the last episode of Chair Wars. Can't believe Tom died!" To which people like FK, Keith and I, rightfully, will freak right the **** out about.

OR, you can post: "Just got done watching the last episode of Chair Wars. Can't believe what happened at the end!" Then, those of us that haven't seen it yet have our appetites whetted for the end, and you haven't ruined it for anybody.

People that want spoilers can do a google search to find them. You're not providing for anyone, you're just ruining it for people who don't want it.

So what exactly is the statute of limitations on spoilers? at what point is it actually OK to talk about events on the assumption that everyone who cares will already know about it?

Well, in the case of fansubs, wait until it's accessible to everyone. In the case of movies, books and domestic TV, I'd say give it a month.

But really, the polite thing to do is just not post spoilers in a public place. I know Star Wars came out forty years ago, but it sucks that I never got to find out the big twist at the end of Empire on my own. I'll be pissed if someone spoils it for my kids.

I have to say, something that bothers me about this thread that I'm seeing is the assumption that there is some kind of malevolence on the part of the spoiler poster.

I mean, sure, MAYBE you have a few "Snape Killed Dumbledore" types out there but, for the most part, people posting about this kind of stuff are just fans who got really excited about something they saw and want to talk about it NOW NOW NOW.

At worst they're assuming nobody outside their own group of people (who would presumably be watching the show at or around the same time) will be paying attention to their Facebook updates or tweets.

So saying stuff like "I want to murder them in their sleep with a fire axe" is a bit... disturbing.

Yeah, that's going too far. Which is why I'm trying to teach people how to post spoiler free, instead of threatening their lives.
