with regards to the Ultra series, I would think that really its a balance between the enjoyment of the human characters as well as the fights between Ultraman and whatever monster happens to be threatening civilization at the moment. its probably part of the reason why most the Ultra heroes have that erroneous time limit/life meter or energy meter indicating how long they have before.... they disappear or die or whatever it is happens to them.
the series itself can't just be one continues fight after another without context, otherwise it just becomes nonsense. you have to have human characters driving the action, the story and the drama of whatever is going on.
can anyone honestly say that an entire half hour or even an entire hour consisting of nothing but explosions and fighting monsters, with no moments for a breather, no explanations as to who the hero or the villains are, showing no sense of what this means for ordinary human beings and how it effects them, no talking whatsoever, would be engaging television?
I mean I know there is that joke that the average attention span of television viewers is about the same as a goldfish, but I would like to think that people, regardless of age, are a lot more sophisticated than that. in general we may not always display it, considering how many really good shows here in the states never get a chance to blossom and bloom past 13 episodes.
anyway, I hope to get a chance to see Ultraman Gaia, because thematically, it reminds me of the Manga series 'X/1999', with the philosophies of the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth clashing, this being personified with Ultraman Gaia and Ultraman Agul respectively.
I'm also fascinated by Ultraman Ace, mostly because for the first half of the series it takes both a man and a woman to come together to become Ultraman, which is rather interesting I must say, it sorta represents the essence of what it takes to create life, by having a man and woman come together to create a new life.
I'm also fascinated by Ultraman Jack, mostly because he becomes Ultraman simply through force of will, without the aid of a weird device like a Spark Lens or anything like that.
I just hope that we'll be able to see these heroes and much more legitimately released in the states, as it so obviously is enriching our lives even now.
