Chopsticks

<snip>
Well after being seated, we notcied everyone was eating their pizza w/ knife & fork. We then leaned over to two ladies next to us, and asked if we had to eat pizza using a knife and fork. They responded w/ a "Well how ELSE would you eat it?". To which we replyed "With our hands". </snip>
I've heard about places where foods you'd eat with your hands were being eaten with utensils (hamburgers, pizza, sandwiches). I think you're the first person I've ever come across that actually experienced that first hand. So was anything else said about you two eating your pizza with your hands?

Meh. I eat anything with my hands. I eat my burger with one hand, use the other for my soda. I eat my noodles with my 2 fingers(when no one is looking of course). The only foods I can't eat with my hands is soup.

No one would ever like to spend their lunch break with me.:laugh:

Well the ladies that were sitting next to us, stuck around to watch us do it, as well as the waitress did as well. Nothing really was said to or about us, that I'm aware of. Although the table w/ the large party did keep pointing at us and whispering. We both thought it was funny as hell...and made a great story for when we got home.

I dont see how anyone would grow up not thinking you could eat pizza with hands. Every single commercial involving pizza has a person using their hands to eat a slice. Every TV show, any time you see someone getting pizza they always use their hands. Those women must have been sheltered.

I think people who eat with chopsticks where forks are available are just looking for attention.

I think it depends on the situation. When people eat out, they want to feel comfortable and at ease...eating shouldn't be a stressful experience. So if they want to use chopsticks at a Chinese restaurant even if there're forks around then I don't think it's a big issue as long as they're comfortable with it.

People who use chopsticks just to show off to the whole world...just ignore them. They can use chopsticks to eat, wow, whoop-de-freakin'-doo. Who cares? It's not exactly a life milestone.:rolleyes2:

Pizza is meant to be finger food...just like chicken wings.:buttrock:
Gotta admit it'd be interesting though to see/try eating a pizza with a knife and fork. Would that be considered a travesty?

Eh, I do it occasionally. Usually when I'm eating while multi-tasking. But I agree, Pizza is a finger food item, like burgers, bbq ribs, etc. Now, eating bbq ribs with a fork and knife takes skill. Haha.

It wasn't just the women...it was EVERYONE in the pizza joint!
I think it may have been a cultural thing...so can anyone in the UK, confirm if it is?

Yeah I mean like, there's a sushi restaurant pretty near to me that I frequent, and there's always, always some snooty-type people in there that go out of their way to ask for chopsticks and make sure everyone sees that they can use them, like they're trying to impress the staff or something. That's what I'm talking about, it's different if you have like arthritis or something.

It's probably different where you are. In San Francisco, every asian restaurant I go to doesn't bother to offer you a knife and fork.

Now when I was learning Japanese and I was butchering the few phrases I knew trying to order Tonkatsu, THAT was an American moron trying for attention. :)
