China Ban's English

Why are several people assuming that the ban is a media-wide one? As far as I can read it's for news and official publications only, which makes total sense to me.

Edit: I have read up more on this, but the ban is apparently covering a wider spectrum than just news and official publications.

Being Chinese, I've seen how kids nowadays are so immersed in western culture that they barely have a clue about. In addition to the usual memes and idioms being created every minute on the internet, they toss about random, and sometimes incorrect Engrish words and phrases in the middle of a sentence to confuzzle the heck out of me. It's getting so bad that even adults and professionals in several places such as Shanghai and Hong Kong do this in everyday life and at work. It's one of my greatest pet peeves when talking to people from those regions.

This ban certainly won't fix a lot of things, but at least I won't want to bash the TV when the news is on.

Poor Chinese kids. They will probably not know much English while they are over there. I understand that they want to purify their language but c'mon, they need to know English too.

Why do they need to know it? Shouldn't we need to know Chinese too? They have roughly the same amount of speakers.

This really offends me as a hispanic.>:(

If you are offended, use the report function.

So, basically the people of China can no longer use the English language for any form of font text or for their resources. Anyone from other countries who are traveling for business or pleasure must learn to speak the natural Mandarin language to interact with the common folks or be banned for life.

Read the thread and article first please.

Fun fact: The U.S. has no official national language, I think it's the de facto language in some states, but it's still an argument that's brought up often when people are all "argh! Learn English ye salty bastards!" (we also speak like pirates in America, so that might make it harder to learn the language)

Though I think it's pretty damn annoying when people try to avoid learning it just because they're lazy, it's still the language spoken by 80% of the country and even though the U.S. is the second largest Spanish speaking country in the world, it'd just be easier to learn English for the moment.
It should be mandatory from the day you enter kindergarten until the day you exit College that you get immersed in as many languages as possible. That is one of the reasons why America is behind is due to that we are screwed in an increasingly global village/marketplace.

Who cares that English is the majority language when it is decreasing each time children of Spanish/Latin speaking descent are born over English ones. By 2050 Spanish will be our other language and will replace English.

But, we should also teach Japanese, Cantonese, French, Mandarin , Arabic and other languages depending on localities of population distribution because it really is the public's interest to do so.

The Chinese won't have domination for much longer anyways, so let them have their isolationist philosophy while the world moves away from them . I found it very interesting to note that allegations of them being smarter than Americans is a load of bull. They , as a COMMUNIST country, only send their brightest and best to schools . And with them coming outwards to countries such as America for higher education, it really shows that we are still better than them otherwise Americans like me would be going there for education. You could also break down othef Eastern Eurasian nations such as Japan but that is another topic...

It's not the job of the government to dictate what languages people should or not not learn.
