Can the Philippines make a decent tokusatsu?

With Zaido seemingly "demoralized" the Filipinos' capability to make a tokusatsu series (at least a homage to any foreign toku shown in the PHL) just like China did with Armor Hero and Korea with SFX Fantasy Rayforce, what do you think about getting over the soap opera screwjobs?

Would require a major change on the part of the networks - considering independent production outfits for film and television are a thing of the past here.

Cathartic melodrama could work with the addition of special effects - so technically speaking the Philippines is making tokusatsu of some sort - just not the Kaiju or Henshin Hero genres.

Edit: Admittedly the issue is that the networks are skinflint on the special effects budget. :laugh:

I mean, not all people here have any idea or knowledge what Philippine TV could do.

To answer your query, they can make one. Of course, it needs budget and "tokusatsu" or scifi series is not the current trend in Philippine TV. Zaido is a good attempt to create a first sci-fi tv series but due to it's soap opera setting (which many Filipinos love), it fails much on toku fans, like you perhaps.

Filipinos love soap operas, fantasy series and love teams. There's no way TV networks will choose this genre to spend their moneys. Zaido only came out due to the nostalgic feel of Shaider to fans.

True. Captain Barbell, Mulawin, Encantadia, and Darna can be considered toku since it uses "special effects".

EDIT: In addition, Philippine TV is about the ratings games. If you could compare ratings of toku shows in Japan to "fantasy" shows in the Philippines, you can see that the ratings of the "fantasy" shows of the PH is much higher than the ratings of toku shows in Japan.

I love Biokids (1990), as I thought it was one of the best attempts at Super Sentai with a low-budget!

But more to the point...

Yes, the Filipinos are very capable of doing SPFX stuff. In the field of the superhero genre, they did movie versions of their own comic-book heroes, including Darna, Lastikman and others, so yes, they can make a decent tokusatsu.

However, as GekiDan stated, for the Philippines to be able to make even a decent Tokusatsu series, there has to be a viewership. Unfortunately, people over there like Soap operas and love teams involving the "cute" actors and actresses (and again, I shall B*tch about how there was no need for such a stupid concept in Philippine media).

Long story short, we as fans of tokusatsu (There are probably more hidden in the closet) must demand that from our TV stations. Show that we will support endeavors for such a thing to happen. Otherwise...the Big Networks won't invest money and talent on Tokusatsu projects.

Another thing needed is to delete the Power Rangers Mentality. otherwise, we can't make Sentai like Thailand did with Sport Ranger.

If the masses ask for a fantasy, what if I made the setting as postmodern as Final Fantasies 7, 8, and 13?
