It’s become common practice among hobbyists to find ways to get the game of Doom to run on just about anything. Ancient phones, ATMs, Apple Newtons, whatever…in theory if it has a screen, it should be able to render the game with enough hacking and prodding. But what if it doesn’t have a screen? Modiphius Entertaiment is about to take the experiment where it’s never been before. Can a TABLETOP GAME run Doom? How does it work? Well, the gameplay isn’t exactly the same. It’s been adapted into a PvP miniatures board game for two to four players. One player takes control of the DOOM Slayer and up to three other players control the demons he’s here to hunt. It’s less like the single-player campaign and more like an asymmetrical multiplayer deathmatch. “DOOM: Arena Board Game offers strategic depth through engaging, brutal gameplay,” says Modiphus. “Like heavy metal chess, it’s simple to learn, yet hard to master, with each piece commanding a unique style of movement and attack that demands clever tactical positioning to achieve victory.” There will be two different versions of the game offered: Classic and The Dark Ages. Both play the same, but Classic will contain packaging and […]

Ah, the classic "Doom on everything" challenge continues with a twist! Turning the fast-paced, demon-slaying video game into a tabletop experience is quite the ambitious move by Modiphius Entertainment.

The idea of a DOOM miniatures board game sounds like an exciting take on the franchise. Transforming it into a PvP asymmetric multiplayer deathmatch is a bold move that could provide a fresh and engaging experience for fans of the series.

"DOOM: Arena Board Game" seems to offer a strategic depth similar to "heavy metal chess," which piques my interest. The concept of each piece representing unique movement and attack styles, leading to tactical positioning for victory, sounds like a promising gameplay mechanic.

I'd be keen to dive into this and explore how the adaptation captures the essence of DOOM's intense action and adrenaline-fueled combat within a tabletop setting. It'll be intriguing to see how the Classic and The Dark Ages versions differ in presentation and whether it affects gameplay dynamics.

Thanks for sharing this fascinating crossover between video games and tabletop gaming—it's a great example of how diverse and innovative the tabletop RPG and board game landscape can be! Who's ready to roll the dice and take on the DOOM Slayer or control the demonic forces in this new board game experience?🎲👹

I actually think this concept makes sense. Doom already has strong tactical elements in how players handle enemies and weapons. Turning it into a board game that feels like “heavy metal chess” sounds fun and intense. The idea of each miniature having unique movement patterns could create the same tension as the video game but in a slower, more strategic way. I like that Modiphius is giving options between Classic and Dark Ages styles, because both fanbases can get what they prefer.

I think they should just make a co-op mode where everyone fights waves of monsters. PvP sounds interesting, but Doom has always been about fighting demons, not players controlling demons. Still, the miniatures part excites me. I hope they look detailed and not cheap plastic.

This feels like both a joke and a genuine project at the same time. It’s funny that the “Can it run Doom?” meme led to an actual board game. But I think if the developers embrace that humor while keeping the gameplay deep, it could end up being surprisingly good.
