Blu-Ray add on for X360

FINALLY something to stack on top of my 360's HD-DVD attachment to prevent it from collecting dust. If they try to launch this at the same price they launched their HD-DVD player attachment, it will more than likely fail. No sane (and unbiased) gamer is going to pay $200 for a blu-ray attachment when for $100 more you can get a new console that does the exact thing you're getting the attachment for, and plays more games. If they launch this at $120 or $150 though, it could stand a good chance on the market as a holiday release. If they can afford to push these at under $100 though this could be the new must have peripheral for the 360, and I myself, already having a ps3 and a blu-ray drive for my PC, would probably buy it at that price just for the sake of collection. No one will know until an actual price is announced though.

Then again, if you read the actual article that that article is taken from, he never officially confirms anything, nor did the MS PR people. It could just be something that's currently on the drawing table, with no official plans of a release at this point.

The Blu-ray feature was the main draw and the biggest selling point of the PS3. This is gonna hurt Sony a lot.

Not exactly, since the 360 BD Drive would only be an add on, it means that, as a new purchase, it would still cost at least $100 (likely more knowing MS) to have a blue ray capable 360 than it would be to have a ps3. Families looking to get one console or another to act as a console for the children and BD player for the family would still likely go the route of the PS3 since it would be the most cost effective option, not to mention having no external attachments to break.

One of the main things that was drawing people into the 360 was how much superior Live was to the PSN in terms of ease of use and features, but if some of the rumored features in the next PS3 firmware update are true, its getting one step closer to being on par with MSs (pay) service, with allowing in game chat with people not playing your game, similar to the 360s private chat channels. The 360s other huge draw is MSs partnership with Netflix, which admittedly is damn convenient. While PS3 really doesn't have anything that compares with that as far as ease of use or movie selections, the ps3s browser is compatible with sites like Veoh and crunchyroll, making it a pretty useful tool for people wanting to get their anime fix on the big screen. Granted they could get that from adding a line out from their PC to their TV, but the same can be said about Netflix.

I really don't see this having a huge effect on Sony's sales as far as first time buyers to current generation consoles go. If priced properly it could definitely hurt sales as far as people who already own 360s and want the added bonus of a DB player goes, but most of those people who would even been looking at a PS3 would be in it more for the exclusives than the BD player, I know when I got my PS3, I wasn't thinking at all about BD movies, it was an afterthought. I was thinking 'damn uncharted looks sweet and I really want to play Folklore... oh.. it comes with a movie too... well.. I guess I can try that out'

I like this. Just cause I love 360, but I always was attracted to the PS3 because of the Blue Ray, but since its coming to XBOX, makes me not so much attracted to PS3, so I can finally say this with a smile on my face :)

Xbox 360>PS3

That's the exact same train of thought I had when I decided to get mine...only I really wanted MGS4 and White Knight Chronicles...course the blu ray player was an added incentive for my dad to get it for me.

I'm gonna be getting a PS3 in the future anyways, so this doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I'd rather just take whatever money I'd spend on this, throw some with it and have another system.

I still stand by my earlier statement that it's still too early to say anything. This is Steve Ballmer we're talking about. He's been known to misspeak and have misunderstandings in the past, not to mention that he ranges from brilliant to certifiably insane on a day to day basis. Nothing may come of this at all, there may not be a peripheral in the works, particularly with how he worded it. If it is, it may be too expensive to even be worth it.

In the end, while this may hurt PS3 sales (which could be a blessing in disguise for sony since they lose money on each PS3 sold, but make it up on games and whatnot) this means that more BD movies will be sold, and who gets a cut of the licensing for BD movies and technology? ZOMG SONY! 360 purists would indirectly be putting money in Sony's pockets. I wonder how much Sony would make off of each actual BD peripheral MS sells, movies not included.

If this news turns out to be true, I wonder how many Fanboys will say ZOMG! PS3 IS DEAD! without realizing this?
