ps:

I hate Bishop, he's not a black character. he is a template. a palette swap character.
NOthing he has done aside from changing his hair identifies him as a black man. even when he first appeared i was like WTF??? what BLACK MAN wears a freaking MULLET?!

He's cool looking though. He kinda reminds me of Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince with a little bit of Little Richard going on up there.

The Black Superhero

Black heroes carry a heavy burden of representing their people and trying not to become a flying streotype.

Bishop is a black man who`s powers come from, well, stealing someone elses energy.

Steel is a great technician, but his early appearences was a homage to a white guy[Supes]

I like folks like Static, Cyborg and Blade. They`re black, you know their black but theres so much more too them then that.

I strongly believe you don`t have to protect the hood to be a black hero, you don't see Superman protecting only the high class neighborhoods all day, he has worlds to save and robots to fight. But even when you take a black hero out of the hood like Luke Cage, they still look strange. Luke is now a member of the esteamed Avengers, he`s the ONLY member not the wear a mask. :confused2

Gotta agree with you there. I've always gravitated more towards the Bishops and Mr. Terrifics of herodom than the more patronizing characters like Luke Cage or Coldcast. I'd rather read about superheroes that just happen to be black rather than black superheroes.

That's also why I continue to tolerate the incessant tokenism that plagues Power Rangers every year. I'll continue to be annoyed that they have "the black guy" on the show just so they have "the black guy" instead of just picking the best actor for the role and he just happens to be of African descent. But PR has at least respectful enough to avoid the blatant stereotypes of either negative or (supposedly) positive bent in most of their minority characters. Just portraying them as teens and young adults, nothing more.

Amen, brutha... Bishop and Storm were some of the first black super characters I felt I could enjoy and love. First time I saw Ororo she was sporting a mohawk and a sword fighting robots. Just a badass character who was black.

Same for Bishop. Fun back story and cool character. He was from the FUTURE... not "the hard streets."

As for PR, like I've said out of almost anything (Zack not withstanding.. he was token and stereotypical...) seems to do it right. Jack,Ethan, TJ, Max and frelling Joel the Sky Cowboy are about as non-stereotypical as you can get! I love that!

well said. cept the first part. :170:

Sorry man, I stand by it for as much as it counts. I hated that early black super heroes had to be "The Black" this or "The Black" that... and I was like, hey... why can't he just be "This" or "That"?

I mean nobody calls Superman, "The White Superman" or Cyclops, "The White Cyclops."

And Cyborg... when he showed up on Challenge of the Superfriends my young heart signed with relief that he wasn't "The Black Cyborg"... BUT... **** if I'd wanna be him! Half his body's missing and I think that's along with some of hims "most important parts!"

I didn't have much love for early black super heroes... unless we can count Shaft. :198:
