Let me tell you about my favorite ship, back in '78 it seemed pretty hip. It wasn't the Millenium Falcon or the Enterprise it was the Battlestar Galactica that took the prize. Sure back then the effects were kind of cheesy, but I loved it like George Jefferson loved his wheezy. Didn't worry about gravity or anything inertial and Apollo's hair looked like a shampoo commercial.

There was an urban rumor floating around that if both series had continued on for additional seasons that the Galactica would've found the 25th Century Earth of Buck Rogers and the two shows would've merged.

That's backed up by the second season of Buck Rogers (where they begin a similar quest for the "lost tribes")

As for the original Galactica, it's still great, and tells much more in ONE season that Moore's version tells in four. It also had the fleet visit alien worlds that seemed to be the inspirations for life and culture on Earth (Wild West world, Planet "Terra"'s "east vs west" war). I still regret Moore doesnt use the Ship of Lights or Count Iblys, or even the Eastern Alliance...at least Larson POPULATED space to keep things fresh.

There's no such thing as not enjoying cheese, it's a superficial excuse to look over some of the series stronger elements.

You mean "Myspace emosexality?", because he's got it down to a tea, together with "Nothing happens for five bloody weeks", he's got that down too

Not that I dont appreciate it for it's stronger moments and characters, but the downbeat mood gets REALLY tiresome after a while.

That's possibly the most inane statement that's been leveled at me in a while. I can refuse to enjoy the cheese if I bloody well want to; opinions are opinions. Believe it or not, it's okay for different people to like and dislike different things.

I was more going for the fact that Moore & co. have made claustrophobia and hopelessness palpable enemies in the show. I find BSG's sense of lonlieness and vast distance between *any* sort of worlds, let alone inhabitable ones, a refreshingly realistic take on space travel. And I'll be the first to concede that the series is inconsistent. They've got reverse X-Files syndrome; the one-shot eps tend to be pretty damn weak, but the arc eps are really good.

I somehow knew this would become a debate about which version of BSG is the best.

Personally, I like the eps of the original that I saw for their sense of adventure and straight-up space opera escapism.

But I LOVE the remake, because it has no equal on television, as far as I'm concerned. It makes huge leaps with character and plot and is constantly trying to undercut the obvious expectations of its audience. The fact that they're truly alone in space, and find almost no habittable planets or other people out there is not only realistic, but it's different. There are no other popular space shows that do that at all.

And that pretty much sums up a big part of why the remake works so well for me. It's not like other space shows. It's not like the original. Never was it meant to be. Never did it need to be.

Both versions are good, but I think which one I like more is obvious...
