Battle Damage in Kamen Rider

PARTY HARD
During the years I've watched Kamen Rider, the effects of damage is similar to that of Power Rangers (not Super Sentai, Power Rangers). They get hit, they got shot, they get slashed, but it's just small explosions and smoke coming from their armor.

Well...I would say that until I watched Kamen Rider Kuuga. I've noticed that out of the entire Heisei Series (except Hibiki and Agito, both of which I haven't watched yet...), the battle damage received in Kuuga are beyond what Ryuki and onwards has ever received. I've noticed that when Kuuga gets slashed, his armor has this HUGE gash on it (even sometimes there's some blood on it). When he got shot with a harpoon, it went THROUGH his shoulder. When he dodged a slash from the Beetle Grongi (the one who can use the Golden Power), a part of his right shoulder pad was CUT off.

Is this because of the directing at the time of Kuuga, or is it because Kuuga is more of a "biological" Rider, like the Showa Riders, than his later successors?

Kuuga was meant to be a reboot series so i guess they wanted it to be as dark as Kamen rider Shin or such, That's why Kuuga and Agito are made of awesome!!! :buttrock:

It has more to do with the budget.
You have to make a suit for each damage. If you are making a scene with a chest-cut, you have to make a suit with that chest-cut on it.
It is much easier to use the wired explosives on the stunt-suit.

Hibiki also had the more "realistic" battle damage. But it seemed to disappear pretty quickly, along with his violent, “amazonish” battle-style and the badass fire-breathing abilities :disappoin

You should consider the nature of the attacks and the nature of the resistance. Agito really didn't take as much damage as Gills but Gills could regenerate limbs and whatnot. The equipment of the Rider War in Ryuki was different. The swords just caused some damage without cutting through the armor most of the time. The explosion was the finisher. Double has the Memory break, and the Rider Gears in 555 were durable. There just isn't much piercing and hacking off body parts in these new series.

Blade had some sick battle damage, though I only recall it happening once or twice.

[HIDE]With Blade, when he fought the Elephant Undead where it crushed his visor. And when Garren fought the Giraffa Undead, how the visor was also damaged in that battle. [/HIDE]

I wouldn't mind seeing more stuff like that.

^He also got kicked in the belt and spontaneously combusted.

I remember that. That was the first time I ever watched Kamen Rider Blade.....in the Philippines. But it was still sick.

Black and RX actually had their suits cut from time to time.

Gai had his chestplate CAVED IN by Ouja's Final Vent.

I know for sure that Kenzaki had his helmet smashed in one episode but Garren might have.

Hibiki was organic so he bled on a few occasions most notably when Kabuki stabbed him.

It really depends on who they're fighting: If the script posts them as an extremely powerful enemy, there's going to bit a bit more effect used.
