ANOTHER new wii is coming...Dec. 7th.

This is useless. Nintendo already gimped the Wii by taking out any kind of gamecube play back on the newest releases of the system. This little wii is just stupid. They want to get a quick cash grab from people that can't afford the wiiU. I wouldn't be surprised if built into this new model wii is the "wiiU commercial channel"

Actually, as far as it's appearing to me (I haven't had a chance to test it yet), the PS3 can still play PS2 games. At least, there's an app in the PS Store for "PS2 System Data" that it says will let me play them (I just got the system yesterday).

Nope.
That's only so PS2 games that can/need to be installed on the PS2 HDD can still work on BC models.

If you have a late model after they removed PS2 Backwards compatibility (Basically any system made after 2008 or a 40GB from that year), that Data is useless.

This new Wii is just gonna be released in Canada, so ...yeah. I can see people sellin them on ebay for a lot of money later

One thing's for sure: It'll be more reliable than the PS3 Super Slim.

You have to take the price into consideration as well. There are people who wanna buy a Wii but are not online gamers and/or never owned or cared for the GameCube. The $99 price tag would be good for those people. Remember, the majority of the Wii's success was the casual gamers.

Also, look on the bright side. Since it doesn't have Wi-Fi, if you like to mod your console to play imported or pirated games, you won't have to deal with Nintendo trying to brick your console since it isn't online ready. Remember that you can't mod most of the current gen consoles because as long as your console is connected to the internet, the companies have control of what you do with the console. It says so on the user agreements/terms of use/terms of service. If you mod them, they will brick them (except for the Wii Mini of course).

I was going to ask that question, but thanks for the answer. which leads to my next question- if the unit gets modded, will it even play Wii Roms loaded from the USB?

Not if its offline during the modding and its undetectable.

I actually like this a lot. From a mechanics standpoint, it'll probably last longer than the older model Wii on account of being a flip top rather than a slot load drive. I guess the lack of internet is a thing, but they're still selling the normal Wii so that's an option.
