Another Century's Episode R (PS3)

Retro Super Robots tend to be larger, size-wise, than more realistic mecha. Part of it is looking impressive, part of it is retro shows not giving a crap about suspension of disbelief.

WTF? I believe you're mistaking Aquarion for Gravion. Common mistake.

Aquarion isn't as bad as Gravion but I would still consider it a C-tier Super Robot show at best. Most of the themes are recycled from more competently written 70's shows, the comedy is very poor, the pacing is bad, the overall conflict is borderline-incoherent, the story has some promise but the scripting is wildly inconsistent.

The combination gimmick is nice but you can't hang your whole show on that, especially if Solar Aquarion with Red-Headed Douchebag in the main cockpit is always going to be the absolute best combination except for the filler episodes that are written for the precise purpose of letting someone else win. Even the gattai sequences are ruined by the utterly juvenile "orgasm" visual metaphors.

About the only bit of Aquarion I thought was anything but staggeringly terrible for a Shojo Kawamori production was the ending. Of course, this ends up being one of many things that the "improved" OVA retelling of Aquarion throws out the window. The OVAs end up being no better, really, aside from writing in a larger role for Reika and a smaller role for other, dumber characters.
