Animated Shows That Handle Serious Issues With Depth?

I'm looking for animated series that don't shy away from serious topics but handle them in a respectful and meaningful way. Shows that blend humor with heavy themes, or those that provide real emotional depth. What are some examples that you think really succeed in this area? Thanks for your recommendations!

One show that always stands out to me is Batman: The Animated Series. It expertly weaves heavy themes like trauma, loss, and redemption into its narratives without losing the essence of what makes it engaging. Just look at "Heart of Ice", Mr. Freeze's backstory is a heart-wrenching exploration of grief and isolation, yet it doesn't feel overly heavy-handed. The combination of Bruce Timm's striking animation and Shirley Walker's haunting score elevates those moments even further.

On a different note, Avatar: The Last Airbender handles serious issues like war, genocide, and personal responsibility with both humor and emotional depth. Characters like Zuko and Katara navigate their struggles realistically, showing growth that resonates deeply with viewers of all ages.

What are your thoughts on how humor can sometimes enhance these serious themes?
