Isayama was in his early twenties when he started this. At that age many people like making dark and extreme characters. Eren became exactly that. Now as an older person he looks back and sees problems with how he handled the ending. I think it is normal for creators to feel this way after many years.

The museum display is cool because it shows the real thoughts of the writer. He wanted a massive twist but now feels the story was not fully honest. Eren received too much sympathy even after doing terrible things. That mix of feelings is probably why many people have different opinions about the finale.
