The Universal Monsters have been a thing since the 1930s, but they’ve had their highs and lows. Lately there have been a lot of lows as Universal can’t figure out what to do with them. A massive reboot called the “Dark Universe” was a cart-before-the-horse stunt that backfired in their faces. Maybe they shouldn’t have tried to initiate it with the blandest Mummy movie ever. It hadn’t been too long ago that they created a Mummy relaunch that DID work. Everybody loved the 1999 film with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, so why not more of that? I don’t know. The obvious doesn’t often occur to those in power. But a brain cell finally functioned and this afternoon THR broke the news that both Fraser and Weisz are in talks to reprise their characters in an upcoming movie. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, better known as the production team Radio Silence, have been enlisted as directors; they are best known for the horror-comedy Ready Or Not and the most recent Scream films. Rick O’Connell is a swashbuckling adventurer. Evie is a smart and clever librarian with a bottomless well of archaeological knowledge. They have a first date that involves a […]

Now that they’re finally bringing Fraser and Weisz back, can they please delete that Tom Cruise reboot from existence? That ship shouldn’t even exist. It completely missed the point of what The Mummy should be. There was no adventure, no charm, no chemistry—just noise and CGI dust. It felt like Universal wanted to copy Marvel’s formula without understanding why people loved the older films in the first place. The 1999 movie worked because it had personality. It was scary, funny, and full of heart. The Cruise version had none of that. If this new film becomes official, I hope they treat it like that reboot never happened. Some mistakes are better left buried—just like a cursed mummy.

I am just glad Fraser is back in big movies again. After his comeback with The Whale, it feels right for him to revisit his most iconic role. It will be nostalgic but also empowering to see him play Rick again, not as a rebooted version, but as an older adventurer who has seen it all. I will definitely watch it if it happens.

Seeing Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz possibly returning is incredible news. I feel like Universal finally realized the mistake of the Dark Universe, which tried too hard to force a shared universe without giving the films substance. Fraser and Weisz as Rick and Evie are iconic, and their presence alone gives the project credibility. I trust Radio Silence to handle the mix of adventure, humor, and supernatural elements. I just hope they don’t overdo the horror or go too meta like some modern franchises. The chemistry between the actors is timeless, and that is what made the originals so memorable. I want new fans to experience what we loved about the first two films, not just nostalgia, but also a story that feels real and exciting.

I am very happy about this news. I have always thought Rick and Evie were one of the best couples in adventure cinema. Their dynamic was believable, funny, and full of energy. I think it is smart to ignore the third movie; it never felt authentic without Rachel Weisz. Having directors who know how to mix humor and horror is perfect. I hope this film gives them new adventures that feel meaningful and exciting. Even small references to past films will make fans like me feel nostalgic without ruining the story. I can already imagine their banter and clever problem-solving, which is what made me love them in the first place.

Watching him play Rick once more—this time as a seasoned, older adventurer rather than a rebooted character—would be both nostalgic and empowering. If this project does happen, it’s something I’d absolutely want to see.
