You know that old sitcom chestnut about the teenager who asks out two girls, and then tries to keep both dates at once? That fabled buffoon has nothing on John Slater, the lawyer played by Brandon Routh in the upcoming comedy Out Of Order. Slater is a big-shot lawyer…well, he wishes he was. His stalled career and the dumpy firm he works for have turned off his snobby supermodel girlfriend, who figures she can do better. John wants to prove he can, and manages to finally land a position at one of the biggest firms in the city. There’s just one problem…he kinda hasn’t quit his old job yet. His boss had a heart attack and it was the man’s dying wish that John take this one last case. Well, no problem — he’ll just take both cases at once. But OF COURSE they’re the same case, on opposing sides of the courtroom. So John has to invent Jack Slater, a different persona, to keep up the charade. Brandon Routh deserves more comedic roles. He’s always had that charming but slightly awkward energy that works perfectly for this kind of setup. The idea of a lawyer pretending to be two different people on opposite sides of the same case sounds absurd, but in a good way. It feels like something from the 90s that we haven’t seen in a while. I like that the director said he wanted to make something “gloriously ridiculous but grounded.” If they can balance the humor with some genuine emotion, this could actually be a surprise hit.

I actually love this premise. It reminds me of old screwball comedies where the lead is trapped in their own lies and keeps making things worse. Brandon Routh is an underrated actor, and seeing him take on a double performance sounds fun. Also, Brooke Shields and Luis Guzmán in the same movie? That’s already worth checking out.

This sounds funny, but also stressful. Playing two lawyers fighting the same case sounds like a nightmare scenario. I think Routh can pull it off though; he has good comedic timing, especially if you’ve seen him in Chuck or Legends of Tomorrow. Hopefully this gets picked up by a streaming service soon

It’s nice to see Brandon Routh doing something fresh. I still remember him as Superman, but his best work has been in smaller projects where he can play quirky characters. This concept sounds old-fashioned but in a comforting way. A comedy that doesn’t rely on crude jokes but on situation and personality could really stand out today.

The cast list surprised me. Brooke Shields and Sandra Bernhard together is such a random but interesting mix. I think this kind of ensemble could make the humor more unpredictable. I’m curious to see if Routh’s two characters ever “face” each other in court through editing tricks. That could be hilarious if done well.
