Super Mario Galaxy Movie Announced For 2026 Release

Nintendo and Illumination Pictures announced Super Mario Galaxy in April 2026 as part of the official celebration for Super Mario’s 40th anniversary. The film follows the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned more than $1.36 billion worldwide. That total made it one of the most successful animated films in history. The first movie also gained momentum online when Jack Black’s Bowser song “Peaches” went viral, creating free publicity and reaching audiences far beyond the theater.

Super Mario Galaxy announcement trailer

The teaser trailer for Super Mario Galaxy sets the tone in a quiet but direct way. It opens with Mario sleeping under a lush tree in the Mushroom Kingdom, with green hills stretching into the horizon. A yellow butterfly enters the frame and briefly rests on his cap. Then, the butterfly soars upward toward Princess Peach’s castle. A glowing mosaic window featuring Peach appears before the trailer transitions into a cosmic setting. Galaxies swirl, stars twinkle, and a yellow Luma floats into sight, suggesting that Rosalina could join the sequel. Finally, the butterfly merges into the movie’s title card, revealing Super Mario Galaxy.

When rewatching the trailer closely, I noticed a few more details. A Monty Mole can be seen surfacing from underground, while the familiar Cheep Cheeps swim through the kingdom’s waters. Their appearance shows that the movie will include both classic enemies and cosmic characters. Furthermore, the background music plays the Yoshi theme from Super Mario World, which strongly hints that Yoshi may debut in this installment.

Although Nintendo and Illumination have not yet revealed the official plot, the trailer makes several things clear. The movie will expand Mario’s world beyond the Mushroom Kingdom while introducing new allies and enemies from the games. With its mix of nostalgia, recognizable characters, and galactic settings, Super Mario Galaxy will serve as a major step forward for Nintendo’s growing film universe.

I think this movie will be a challenge because Galaxy has a different tone compared to the first. The original was full of humor and fast moments. Galaxy requires balance. It is a cosmic journey, so I want to see mystery and wonder, not only jokes. If Illumination can mix both styles, they can surprise even critics who did not like the first film.

Nintendo is building a larger film universe, and Mario Galaxy is a natural second step. If they succeed, I can imagine later movies for Zelda, Donkey Kong, or even Metroid. The important thing is to treat each property with its own identity. Galaxy is cosmic, Zelda would be adventurous, Metroid darker. If Nintendo continues carefully, they can create something lasting.

I am very happy they decided to adapt Super Mario Galaxy. For me, Galaxy was the best Mario game ever created because of the music, the planets, and the sense of wonder. I can already imagine how beautiful the animation will look when Mario is jumping from one small planet to another. I hope they keep the same feeling of discovery and not just turn it into another fast comedy. The story of Rosalina also deserves attention. If she is included, it would be sublime

I am a long-time Mario fan since the NES, but Galaxy was the first game that made me emotional. Rosalina’s storybook in the observatory touched me. I want them to include that part in the movie. It will make the film more meaningful, not just a comedy adventure.

Wow, they really surprised us, making everyone think the next movie would be based on Mario World because they used Yoshi’s theme in the teaser. I was sure Yoshi would be the big focus, but instead they announced Super Mario Galaxy. Honestly, that twist makes me even more curious about how they will use Yoshi now. Maybe he will still appear as a major character, or maybe they are saving him for another film. Either way, it shows Nintendo and Illumination know how to play with fan expectations. It also makes me think they might be building a connected Mario film universe, where World, Galaxy, and maybe even Odyssey can all get their own stories.

It is funny to me that Chris Pratt is both Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy and now Mario in Super Mario Galaxy. The irony is clear. He already has experience leading adventures in space, and now he is jumping into another galaxy story, just in a very different way. The pun writes itself: from guarding the galaxy to plumbing through the galaxy. Some people may criticize his casting again, but I think the connection makes it amusing rather than a problem. It feels like he was destined to do a galaxy film no matter what role he takes.

I noticed the tree on the hill just like in Rosalina’s storybook! That small detail gave me chills because it shows they are not forgetting the emotional side of Super Mario Galaxy. Never in my life would I have expected Nintendo to actually make a Mario Galaxy movie, since many fans thought they would focus on simpler games first. But yes, please do so! Galaxy has so much heart, with Rosalina’s past and the observatory atmosphere. If they bring that storybook scene into the film, it will make longtime fans like me feel rewarded.

I honestly thought the next Super Mario movie would be based on Super Mario World, so I was really surprised when they announced it would be Super Mario Galaxy instead. Of all the directions they could have taken, this one feels very special to me. It looks like a huge love letter to one of the most cherished Mario games ever made. I can still remember my younger self playing Galaxy for the first time, being amazed by the planets, the music, and the story. Not long after, I played Galaxy 2 and felt the same joy all over again. Those memories are very important to me, and I know many others around the world feel the same way about these games. That is why this movie feels like the perfect sequel opportunity. Nintendo is choosing to celebrate a masterpiece that people still treasure today, and I want to thank them for that. I just hope the film captures the wonder and heart of the original game and does not disappoint fans who hold Galaxy so close to their hearts.
