Super Mario Galaxy Movie Announced For 2026 Release
Nintendo and Illumination Pictures announced Super Mario Galaxy in April 2026 as part of the official celebration for Super Mario’s 40th anniversary. The film follows the record-breaking success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned more than $1.36 billion worldwide. That total made it one of the most successful animated films in history. The first movie also gained momentum online when Jack Black’s Bowser song “Peaches” went viral, creating free publicity and reaching audiences far beyond the theater.
Super Mario Galaxy announcement trailer
The teaser trailer for Super Mario Galaxy sets the tone in a quiet but direct way. It opens with Mario sleeping under a lush tree in the Mushroom Kingdom, with green hills stretching into the horizon. A yellow butterfly enters the frame and briefly rests on his cap. Then, the butterfly soars upward toward Princess Peach’s castle. A glowing mosaic window featuring Peach appears before the trailer transitions into a cosmic setting. Galaxies swirl, stars twinkle, and a yellow Luma floats into sight, suggesting that Rosalina could join the sequel. Finally, the butterfly merges into the movie’s title card, revealing Super Mario Galaxy.
When rewatching the trailer closely, I noticed a few more details. A Monty Mole can be seen surfacing from underground, while the familiar Cheep Cheeps swim through the kingdom’s waters. Their appearance shows that the movie will include both classic enemies and cosmic characters. Furthermore, the background music plays the Yoshi theme from Super Mario World, which strongly hints that Yoshi may debut in this installment.
Although Nintendo and Illumination have not yet revealed the official plot, the trailer makes several things clear. The movie will expand Mario’s world beyond the Mushroom Kingdom while introducing new allies and enemies from the games. With its mix of nostalgia, recognizable characters, and galactic settings, Super Mario Galaxy will serve as a major step forward for Nintendo’s growing film universe.
