If you’ve been wondering if Crunchyroll will be distributing the announced movie based on Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, that was never really in question (they have the series) but it was confirmed in writing today. Crunchy’s latest PR release announces the feature film, titled Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: A lonely dragon wants to be loved, will be released globally through them. The lonely dragon is Tohru, who Kobayashi saves from a perilous situation one day. Because of her act of heroism, Tohru insists she must “pay off the debt” by becoming Miss Kobayashi’s personal maid. Kobayashi herself is an average office drone who once led a normal, bland life – until this. Tohru can take on human form, but not completely — she’s still got horns and a tail — but fortunately few seem to notice. The premise has generated two seasons of comedy and now a full movie. Things are about to get serious. though. Here’s the film synopsis: Miss Kobayashi, Tohru, Kanna, and Iruru’s peaceful lives are shattered when Kanna’s father, Kamun Kamui, leader of the Chaos Forces, arrives and forces her to return to the Dragon World to fix a past mistake. This sounds awesome. I always thought this show needed a big moment like this. Kanna is my favorite, and I’m excited to see more about her past and her family. I didn’t expect them to go into dragon politics, but that could be cool if done right. As long as they keep the jokes and cute parts, I’m in.

I’ve been a fan of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid since season one, and honestly, I didn’t expect a full movie. That’s amazing news. But I do hope they keep the same animation quality as Kyoto Animation always gives. I know they suffered a lot, and it means something special to see their work again. The trailer better have that same energy from the openings and fight scenes. Also, will the film be canon? If this changes something big like Kanna’s fate, I hope they handle it with care. Still, I’m glad Crunchyroll got the rights.

I liked the anime, but I’m not sure it needs a movie. The story already felt complete in a way. Now it sounds like they’re adding war and big events just to make it feel epic. That doesn’t always work. Some stories are better when they stay small and focused. But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe they found a smart way to connect the dragon world and Kobayashi’s life. If they show her standing up for Kanna like a real parent, that might be powerful. I’ll wait for the reviews first.

So we’re going from cooking and bath jokes to dragon war and family trauma? Okay then. I just hope Tohru still makes omelet rice while people shoot lasers in the background. Sounds like we’re in for the most dramatic slice-of-life ever made. Crunchyroll better not mess this up or take too long to release it, like they always do.
