The DC Comics Film Universe is in a bit of a weird place right now. Fresh off of word that the first screening of Aquaman went very well and got positive reviews, Joss Whedon today revealed that he’s not going to be directing Batgirl. And now, we’re hearing that the Flashpoint film, which is the first film to star Ezra Millers’ Flash will be going in a different direction from the comic event that it derives from.
According to That Hashtag Show (see video below), the Flashpoint film will feature Dr. Arthur Light as the film’s antagonist, and what’s more, Captain Cold, Killer Frost, and Heat Wave may appear in the film in some capacity. But as to what, it’s not clear. There’s also references to another DC Comics villain, Johnny Quick.
The reason this is so interesting is that Flashpoint (the event in the comics anyway) is about Barry Allen finding himself on his own Earth, but everything is different. Wonder Woman and Aquaman are at war, Superman and Green Lantern aren’t around, Batman is someone else, and The Flash doesn’t exist. Captain Cold was in the original book, but as a hero, and as for Heat Wave and Frost, they weren’t prominent in the story at all. A Flash villain who was is Eobard Thawn, who is the Reverse Flash. He apparently will be in the film “in an interesting way”, but it’s unclear to what they mean by that.
It should be noted that this is just speculation and rumor at present. The film hasn’t begun production yet, but could very soon.
