Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated Oscars
Everywhere All at Once won seven out of 11 Oscar last night. It also made history that could change the status quo of Hollywood. The film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” captivates with its blend of genres. It wins at Golden Globes and Actors Guild Awards, among others. The Academy Awards seals its position as a cinematic masterpiece. Despite limited release, it earns $106,702,207 at the box office.
There are people who doubted its potential but it slowly change opinions. People took attention when it won awards from Dorian Awards,Screen Actors Guild Awards and many more.
“The Daniels” won Best Original Screenplay,Best Director and the biggest award which is Best Picture with their producer Jonathan Wang. Paul Rogers won best editing too. It dominated majority of the acting roles. The Daniels took a risk and make a project that doesn’t sound commercially viable but they pull it off.
Everything Everywhere All at Once revitalized the careers of many of its actors.
“The Daniels” directed this post-genre film that resonates with moviegoers worldwide, cementing its place in cinematic history as a true tour de force. One of the biggest impacts of this movie is casting Michelle Yeoh, A woman on her 60s as lead. You can see older men as lead in action films but rarely you see older women get the opportunity. What is fascinating is the role was originally a man. Yeoh is suppose to play Waymond and Evelyn’s role is first offered to Jackie Chan. When Chan declined the movie, They switch the genders and made Michelle the lead. Everything Everywhere All at Once became the legend it is afterwards.
Michelle Yeoh has participated in action films throughout her career. Years ago, when Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon received an Oscar nomination, none of the actors were nominated, and they snubbed Michelle’s performance as the lead actress in the movie.
Now Michelle Yeoh just became the first Asian Woman to win Best Actress and the second woman of color since Halle Berry.
Jamie Lee Curtis has been typecast for horror movies and genre films. Despite of having the label of Nepo-Baby because her parents are popular actors, she had proven she worked hard on her own merit. She had been respected as an actress for a long time but she never won for her acting. Now her cool career goes full circle when she wins her first Oscar. Her role Deirdre Beaubeirdre have a minimal face time but she left an impression.
Ke Huy Quan‘s win for Best Actor is an inspiring story because he quit acting for almost three decades. The lack of opportunities for Asian male actors had been a problem for decades, but after working behind the camera for a long time, he got inspired to give acting one last try. The success of Crazy Rich Asians inspired him to take up acting again. Ironically, he ended up playing the role of Michelle Yeoh’s husband, an actress from the very movie that inspired him to act again.
Everything Everywhere All at Once made his dreams come true
Stephanie Hsu is also nominated for the best supporting actress category. Not bad for a new comer, whose previous role I remember is a few line minor character in Shang-Chi. She didn’t win but had shown support for her co-star ad co-nominee Jamie Lee Curtis. I am sure her nomination though will give her enough opportunities.
