Yeoh, Check Out This Blade Runner 2099 Preview

In 1982 Ridley Scott released the original Blade Runner, a film that…WASN’T the blockbuster you might have expected (’82 was a crowded summer) but found its audience eventually, and permanently changed sci-fi as we know it. Things considered common to the cyberpunk genre, like the visuals of a rain-soaked neon city, were first seen here.

For some reason it took decades for a sequel to get off the ground, but Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 was finally released in 2017. It co-starred a much older Harrison Ford but still didn’t resolve the mystery of whether or not his character was a Replicant. Enough people liked Blade Runner 2049 that it revitalized the brand and led to more “gigs” for it, like the animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus and many novels and comics.

Now comes Blade Runner 2099, a live-action series from Amazon Prime. How are things different 50 years later? Well…the Replicants won. They now run Cyberpunk LA and it’s the humans that are second class. In this world lives Cora, a human fugitive who’s been hiding from Blade Runners by disguising herself as one. She meets Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner whose time of expiration is almost up. She seems to know something about a runaway Replicant who’s hiding something…something that could lead to a revelation that could change humanity’s fortune.

Ridley Scott will serve as an executive producer on Blade Runner 2099, with Silka Luisa as showrunner. Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) stars as Cora, alongside Michelle Yeoh (she’s Michelle Yeoh) as Olwen. Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman King), Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon) and Tom Burke (Furiosa) play unnamed characters.
