E3 2017: DICE Reveals Why FIFA 18 On Switch Is Different
When Electronic Arts arrived at the Nintendo Switch reveal event and noted that FIFA 18 would be coming to the system, people were excited. But then, some rumors were spreading that this version would be a “dumbed down” port instead of a true FIFA experience. At the EA Play event yesterday, that was proven to not be the case. As many features were coming to the Switch version of the game, and EA themselves noted that this version was custom built for the Switch.
However, there were two notable differences, one was that The Journey (aka the story mode) was not going to be in the Switch version, and also, the engine powering the game was not Frostbite, but a special engine made for the Switch. When asked why The Journey wasn’t coming to the Switch version, producer Andrei Lazaresco told Eurogamer, “The Journey is powered by Frostbite. When we looked at the platform and its unique features, we made the choice of custom-building the game.”
This was also their logic for not using the Frostbite engine on the system. They noted that they could have used it, but rather, they wanted to do a custom engine for the Switch, and they seemed content with the result. Eurogamer noted that the graphical difference is very noticeable, but, when you play the game on the go, that desire for superior graphics seems to melt away. Will it be enough to win over gamers? We’ll find out September 29th.
