Designers Talk Supreme Leader Snoke From Star Wars
One of the loose ends that are still in the new Star Wars universe via The Force Awakens is the entity known as Supreme Leader Snoke. Who is head of the First Order, and is master to Kylo Ren. While not fully seen technically, as we only viewed him via hologram, he was still an impressive entity.
Neal Scanlan, the creature designer for Force Awakens, talked with IGN about Snoke and how he came to be:
“We went through several — many, actually — ideas of what [Snoke] might be,” Scanlan said. “Dare I even say this, I think at one point we even saw him as female. Nothing was off the cards, so when we started to think about a character like this, there were lots of ways of approaching what he could be… and a lot of ideas were thrown out.”
On the hologram note, Scanlan talked about how they tried many different techniques to try and bring Snoke to life. Including real people acting like him in some way, and animatronics. In the end though, motion capture was selected:
“We felt, in the mix, it would be much better to develop that and have someone like Andy Serkis play that role and bring his own unique sort of offering to it,” he said.
