The world’s first and only “Pigeon Dating Sim” Hatoful Boyfriend will be receive a updated re-release this summer on PC and Mac via Steam, GOG, Humble, and other digital storefronts with improved art and music.
The game will be remade by developer Mediatonic and publisher Devolver Digital, known for publishing the 2013 Shadow Warrior remake and Hotline Miami.
Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker said in a press release, “Our research shows that consumer fatigue for space marines and dragons is at an all-time high – gamers are ready for something new and fresh. Semi-realistic pigeon dating simulations are the next great frontier in video games.”
In Hatoful Boyfriend you take on the role of a human girl attending St. PigeoNation’s prestigious bird school. From there you learn about the game’s avian characters and can pursue a friendship or even romantic relationship with your choice of bird. As someone who’s got some experience with the game’s storyline it’s suggested that new players beware of fowl story twists.
Gameplay of Hatoful Boyfriend is typical of most visual novels in that players decide on their characters actions during the day including which classes the character attends and which feathered companions they decide to visit. Doing so will raise you characters stats in different areas and choosing a bird to visit more often will determine what character’s story path the player pursues.
The player spends most of their time reading the story as it progresses and occasionally making decisions on behalf of their character when prompted to during the narrative.
Originally released in 2011 by developer Hato Moa Hatoful Boyfriend had a limited release as a free demo and then later a full release with an epilogue. The English version of the game contained several typos and mistakes, along with very limited compatibility to no compatibility with Windows 7, Vista, and Mac OS X above 10.6 making it difficult to find working versions of the game.
The updated game will be playable at E3 next week, but only by appointment.
