Cyberpunk 2077, the long-anticipated RPG from CD Projekt Red of Witcher fame, has had its fair share of delays. The game takes its world and lore from a classic tabletop RPG, also called Cyberpunk, and its makers figured the excitement over the video game would be the perfect way to attract newcomers to the tabletop version.
And so Cyberpunk Red was announced by R. Talsorian Games in June of 2019….its storyline is a prequel to the Cyberpunk 2077 video game, and connects the video game’s canon to the tabletop version. It also provides some hints as to what to expect from the anticipated game.
Now it shares something else in common with Cyberpunk 2077: it’s been delayed, at least by several months. R. Talsorian himself made the announcement in a blog post today: “We’ll just come right out and say it. The TRPG industry got punched in the gut by the pandemic and there’s just no way we can release in June without compromising quality. We’re currently looking at summer’s end for a release but until the world calms down and things stop fluctuating, our crystal ball is full of fog.”
Note that a preview version of Cyberpunk Red was released last year by R. Talsorian; this “Starter Kit” contains a full adventure scenario, a lorebook, two custom dice, six ready-to-go character templates, four maps and a set of newspaper clippings from the Cyberpunk world. If you can track down a copy, you can play an early version of Cyberpunk Red while you wait for any other version to show up.
