Cat Lady Enters Steam Early Access
Viz Media and Rose City Games, who previously partnered up to release The World Next Door last year, have introduced their second collaboration: Cat Lady! In this fast-paced action roguelike, you’re stuck in a haunted house. Who will save you? Cats….lots of cats. Cats are the weapon. Keep a cat loaded at all times!
It just so happens I am in a unique position to report on this game. Rose City Games and Viz had a booth in the arcade area of Portland Retro Gaming Expo (PRGE) this weekend, and a demo of Cat Lady was there to try. I HAVE PLAYED CAT LADY; here is what I experienced.
You control a little girl, Ally, who is holding a cat. You move Ally around with the left stick and the direction she’s holding her cat with the right stick. The left trigger fires what is either a fireball or a hairball; all character sprites are rendered in solid black and white lineart.
As you enter each room, the doorway is blocked unless you defeat all enemies inside. They make a beeline for you, and they each have unique attacks. One baddie is a trap door that a hand pops out of periodically to throw a giant beach ball in your face (this is the first enemy you meet in the demo). Other monsters included a teddy with an evil grin that tried to bite me. Right before each enemy attacks, the danger zone of being hit will be lit up in red; Ally must move away within that time.
Cat Lady was an enjoyable game and I would say it’s worth the $9.99 it costs at the moment.
What a cat-astrophe, Grandma’s mansion has been cursed! Ally must team up with Granny’s many cats, who have gained magical abilities, to pound and paw perilous poltergeists in the newly-haunted abode. Explore enchanted areas, rescue cats, and upgrade your kitty companions to save the day!
Cat Lady is available now on Steam Early Access. The finished version of the game is coming in Spring 2020.
