Cast Of Community Virtually Reuniting To Perform Old Script
Speaking of Joel McHale….After some early years dabbling in cheap Internet Flash-toon comedy, Dan Harmon finally broke into the Network Machine with Community, a sitcom whose premise only seemed simple from the outside. The basic structure was that of a disgraced lawyer heading back to community college and holding study sessions with a gang of eclectic misfits…but it soon become apparent it was more than that.
Harmon wasn’t satisfied with simple plots or story structure, and performed some wild experiments with Community that would foreshadow his later embracement of outright insanity with Rick and Morty. Most memorable was an episode that started out with Jeff Winger (the lawyer character) rolling a set of dice and buddy Abed warning him that by doing so, he was now creating six different timelines. We were then shown all six possible outcomes, including a “Darkest Timeline” that would become a popular Internet meme.
Now Community is….not coming back, but we’re getting something close to it. The cast of the series, including McHale, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi, Danny Glover, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, and series creator Harmon, will be Zooming back together for a virtual table read of Season 5, Episode 4, “Cooperative Polygraphy.” Ken Jeong may even be showing up, if he’s invited.
This particular episode was likely chosen for two reasons…one, it’s a “bottle episode” that takes place entirely within the study room. Two, the plot is the cast dealing with the death of Pierce Hawthorne, so it isn’t necessary to involve Chevy Chase in this. (Good decision.)
You can watch the virtual Community table read reunion on Monday, May 18 at 2 PM Pacific / 5 PM Eastern, on Sony’s official Community YouTube page. Proceeds benefit José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and Frontline Foods.
