Borderlands 2 was, and still is, an amazing game. The sequel to the surprise hit from Gearbox brought a lot of new players to the world of Pandora, and it’s a world that is filled with life, action, and Easter Eggs. But, one of the most interesting Easter Eggs in the game is an NPC called Michael Mamaril. You likely won’t know his name (barring you hearing it from other Borderlands 2 players), but his story is touching.
Basically, there was a young man named Michael Mamaril, he and his friends loved playing Borderlands, and so when Michael died at the age of 22, a friend asked Gearbox for a eulogy done by a Borderlands character. But, they decided to up the ante as it were and not just do the Eulogy, but make Michael a part of the game itself. A truly stirring tribute from a company to a sadly departed gamer.
So, game over, right? Wrong! Because Gearbox was smart and realized that this NPC could be a truly ultimate Easter Egg, so, they gave NPC Michael Mamaril (picture of him above) a very interesting task, to give players a special weapon should they ever find him. Keywords here are “EVER FIND HIM”. Because as word of Michael began to spread among the Borderlands 2 crowd, everyone began to look for him in the game. Problem was, he never stayed in the same spot for too long, leading to many long and hard searches for him. Well, we’re here to help you out, as we want you to find Michael, and get the cool weapons he’s offering.
Now, as we noted, there are a LOT of places he can be, so you’ll need to be ready to look around for a while. If you’re dedicated, then you better head to Sanctuary.
Once you spawn in Sanctuary, one of the first places you’ll want to look in the South West Alley, he’s sneaky like that. There’s also a staircase near Moxxi’s bar that has an alley nearby, check there too. If you’re really lucky, he’ll actually be in Roxxi’s bar, that’s where our guy Craig found him. There are two places in the bar that Michael Mamaril can be at. He’ll be right at the bar, or, he’ll be nearby the area of Sir Hammerlock, check the whole bar just to be safe.
Still no luck finding him? Ok, leave the bar and go through the side door on the way to the Black Market, check one of the corners near it and see if Michael is there. If not, check inside Marcus’ store, the whole store, if still no dice get on the path towards the Crimson Raiders HQ. Once at the HQ, look for Tannis, see if Michael is there. If not, check every locker and washing machine (we kid you not) to see if Michael is inside one of them. Be thorough!
If somehow not there, head to the southern newsstand and look around there. Keep pressing on if not and look inside Zed’s. If still not found, look for Claptrap, which may be a key place to looks as the friends of Michael Mamaril asked for the voice actor behind Claptrap to voice the eulogy we mentioned earlier. So it goes to reason that if Claptrap is nearby, then so is Michael. Well, hopefully. Let’s keep it going!
Scooter’s is the next place on the “Where is Michael Mamaril?” list, you’ll need to check next to the tire stack in the basement level. If he’s not there, then make the best of the situation and go upstairs to loot the lockers and boxes that can be opened.
If you STILL have not found him, then the only thing you can do is save, reload Borderlands 2, and start the whole thing all over again. Yes, we know it’s tiresome, and a bit tedious, but, it really will be worth it in the end. Why? Well, if you find Michael, and every time you find Michael, you’ll get a weapon from him. More times than not, you’ll get a blue-level weapon, such as an SMG like Craig got. But, you can also get purple and orange levels of weapons as well, like a Grenade Launcher, among other things. This makes the search for Michael Mamaril not just a quest, but a very rewarding one.
Oh, and there’s also the fact that the mere act of finding Michael Mamaril brings you something more valuable than any gun, it’ll give you a special Borderlands 2 achievement called “Tribute To A Vault Hunter”, which is what Michael was in full, and it’s lovely to see that Gearbox Software honored him in this way. And, it ensures that every Borderlands 2 players at least try to find Michael, which will keep his legacy alive for a long time.
That’s not to say there haven’t been issues with it, apparently, the Xbox versions of Borderlands 2 have had a much easier time with finding Michael than the PC version of the game, which means that a lot of players are missing out on the fun, and epic weapon rewards. In fact, entire guides have been put up on various sites to help try and find Michael Mamaril, it’s become a bit of a holy grail quest, which honestly just adds to the appeal of it all if you ask us. I mean, a grail quest is meant to be a challenge, but also have powerful rewards to be had, right? Well, that’s what this is here.
Now, some players have noted that because of the randomness of the guns that Michael gives you, you can get a clunker or two, but it’s worth the risk if you’re willing to find him. And anything you don’t use you can get rid of for profit, right?
So, you Borderlands 2 players who want to test your skills and luck, if you’re up to the ultimate achievement/weapon challenge, you’ll get started on the quest to find Michael Mamaril. Load up everyone, and let the quest for him begin.
