Denzel Washington in Training Day

And the Most Decorated Actor is Denzel Washington

He is more than just an award-winning actor. When it comes to wearing hats, he’s been an actor, director, and producer.  Denzel Hayes Washington, Jr. was born in Mount Vernon, New York on December 28, 1954.

Washington’s awards are well merited as he has been on the big screen for years more than most modern TV shows. Take a look at this list and you can begin to see eye to eye with me.

  • A Tony Award.
  • Two Academy Awards.
  • Three Golden Globe Awards.
  • Two Silver Bears.
  • The Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award (2016).
  • The New York Times named him the greatest actor of the 21st century (2020).
  • The Presidential Medal of Freedom (2022).

Inside the Accolades

Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke in Training Day

The first four accolade categories are well-received by every fan who admires the savvy style common to his movies.  These range from action to drama and mystery.  He came to prominence in 1982 in the medical drama series St. Elsewhere becoming everyone’s favorite black actor.

The first time I saw him was in the futuristic action drama Deja Vu where he played the role of an investigator of a future crime.   Then he suddenly appeared in an action war movie A Soldier’s Story (1984).  Five years later he won his first Academy Award for the movie Glory (1989).

The fans applauded him when he donned the gangster in American Gangster (2007) and later a top spy in Equalizer (2014).

In 2000, Washington made history again, becoming the first person of color to win to the Golden Globe Awards since Sidney Poitier in 1963. The award was for his role in The Hurricane.  That same year, he appeared in the Disney movie Remember The Titans, which broke box office records for the studio, grossing over US$100 million.

Marching on to another box office success for the movie John Q (2002), he produced his first movie, Antwone Fisher.  He also co-starred in the film. Later in 2007, he directed his first film, The Great Debaters.

Presidential Awards

What has Washington done for his people? Behind the scene, this award-winning actor is a warm-hearted philanthropist. He has been at the helm of the Girls and Boys Club of America since 1993, becoming their chief spokesman since then. In 1995 he was elected to their board of directors.

In love and honor a New York elementary school was renamed after him.

Other notable work from him involves helping financially with the housing program for army veterans and donating more than $2.5 million to the building project of his church.

 Personal Life

Washington is married to Pauletta Pearson (1993) and have four children together.   In 1992 he created the production company Mundy Lane Entertainment.

Denzel Hayes Washington is a TV hero and a day-to-day normal person. He faces our trials and tests but still finds ways to help others move along. The question is never about deserving his awards, it has always been about what makes him such an enigmatic presence onscreen.

Denzel Washington's career has been nothing short of spectacular. I've admired his work since he first appeared in St. Elsewhere, and witnessing him receive his first Academy Award for Glory was a joyful moment for me. He's done everything from action films like American Gangster to moving tragedies like Remember The Titans. Aside from his acting abilities, I'm moved by his charity efforts, particularly his engagement with the Girls and Boys Club of America. Denzel Washington's legacy goes far beyond his numerous awards.

Denzel Washington is a legendary actor who has left his imprint on the entertainment business. I've admired him since first seeing him in A Soldier's Story, and his subsequent performances have just added to my admiration. His Golden Globe triumph for The Hurricane was unprecedented, and it's encouraging to see him actively contributing to society through his charity endeavors. It's no surprise he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom; he certainly deserves all of the attention and acclaim.

I can't believe nobody mentioned Malcolm X! Denzel's performance in that movie was beyond words. He completely transformed into the civil rights leader, capturing his spirit and charisma flawlessly. Malcolm X will always be my top Denzel movie.

My personal favorite is The Equalizer. In that character, Denzel was a total badass, taking on the evil guys while saving the innocent. It's action-packed and brilliantly highlights his personality; I hated it when they replaced him with Queen Latifah

My favorite Denzel film has to be Training Day! As Alonzo Harris, he was equally as fierce and persuasive. That part definitely put his acting skills on display.

My favorite Denzel movies....The decision between Man on Fire and American Gangster is difficult. The camaraderie that Denzel and Russell Crowe displayed while playing Frank Lucas was incredible. But in Man on Fire, he simply delivered Creasy's character such a depth of unadulterated emotion and intensity. Both movies are simply amazing!
