SUMMARY: A young woman changes her identity to marry into a family and get revenge on her biological mother, who abandoned her. The mom had it coming.
In “A Graceful Liar”, Cha Jeong-Won, had a pitiful childhood. She bears scars from her father’s wrongful conviction for murder and her mother’s abandonment. Her mother, Han Hye-Ra, left her behind to pursue wealth and power, eventually marrying into the influential Kunhyang Group. When she grew up, she crossed paths with her mother. Incredible! Her own mother didn’t even recognize her and mistook her for her rich friend, Joo Yeong-Chae.
Cha Jeong-Won grows up consumed by a desire for revenge. To infiltrate the elite family that destroyed her life, she assumes a false identity. She borrowed her rich friend’s name and enters the household of her rich friend’s fiancé, Jin Se-Hun, heir to a conglomerate. Jin Se-Hun does not realize he’s being deceived and falls head over heels for his fake fiancée.
Cha Jeong-Won is focused on her simple revenge plan:
Joo Ha-Neul is the brother of Joo Yeong-Chae and knows Cha Jeong-Won because she has been his sister’s friend since they were very young. Best friends? Not quite. Joo Yeong-Chae is a spoiled brat, and always took advantage of Cha Jeong-Won since she knew she was poor, but talented. Joo Ha-Neul was not like his mean sister. He actually liked Cha Jeong-Won and didn’t agree with the idea of her trading places with his sister.
It’s CRAZY! The marriage between his sister, Joo Yeong-Chae, and Jin Se-Hun, heir to a conglomerate, had been personally arranged by his mother. His mother does not like to be crossed. Even if his mother didn’t unleash her wrath, what about the other consequences of her deception? He tried to dissuade Cha Jeong-Won, but to no avail.
It turns out that the ignorant fiancé is the heir to the conglomerate that her heartless, greedy mother married into, the Kunhyang Group. That means her future mother-in-law is none other than Han Hye-Ra, her biological mother. Cha Jeong-Won becomes more determined to continue the masquerade. Her thirst for vengeance must be satisfied. However, her relationship with Joo Ha-Neul complicates matters. He is sincere, kind, and easy to love. But he is tied to the family she despises.
Cha Jeong-Won’s double life grows increasingly perilous. Nevertheless, the war between mother and daughter is her TOP PRIORITY! The mother, Han Hye-Ra, wants to protect her empire, and the daughter, Cha Jeong-Won, wants to destroy it. Han Hye-Ra abandoned her child to escape poverty.
Will Cha Jeong-Won destroy her mother’s empire, or will she be undone by her own lies?

“A Graceful Liar” has mixed reviews, but that often happens for these soap-opera-type Korean dramas with over 50 episodes. Everything from an entertaining plot with dramatic twists and compelling performances TO a “slow train wreck” reminiscent of a soap opera. If you’re a fan of revenge dramas and complex family sagas, you’re going to love it! If not … eh!
