“Su Ji and U Ri” is a 2024 Korean drama series, with 100+ episodes, and categorized as a Family or Soap Opera, Medical Drama, Romance, and Comedy (Rom-Com). The alternate title is “A Profitable Cage”.
The series is airing on South Korea’s local TV channel and episodes are being uploaded to Viki after the broadcast. No surprise this series is taking the time slot that was previously occupied by “Unpredictable Family”, another KBS family drama. Both series are a soap opera-type Korean drama with over 100 episodes, and each episode lasts for about half an hour.
♦ Why Are Doctors Terrible Patients?
In “Su Ji and U Ri”, begins with a psychiatrist trying to convince a patient not to commit suicide. The psychiatrist is Doctor Jin Su Ji. She was successful in getting the patient to change her mind. Someone recorded the entire incident and circulated the video via the Internet. Consequently, Doctor Jin Su Ji became an instant celebrity.
Jin Su Ji was happy to use her celebrity status if it would help her reach more patients. She wants to erase the stigma that comes with people reaching out to receive psychiatric treatment. If a person is sick, whether physically or mentally, they should be able to receive proper medical treatment.
Jin Su Ji works at a Haedeul Hospital and is invited to appear on Variety TV shows. People can call in and ask for help. The whole world loves the doctor who stopped a patient from committing suicide and she’s on top of the world. If her life is going well, then she should be mentally well. Right?
Chae U Ri is also a doctor. He has just completed his mandatory military service and was offered a position in the psychiatry department at Haedeul Hospital. His first encounter with Jin Su Ji resulted in a misunderstanding. The misunderstanding was immediately cleared up. Since they were going to be working closely together, Chae U Ri asked her to erase everything and start over. She agreed.
Shortly after their first misunderstanding, they continued to cross paths with each other and the different incidents resulted in more misunderstandings. There is a major difference between the two doctors.
- Chae U Ri has a stable and happy family life.
- Jin Su Ji wants to honor her parents and grandmother and help her siblings succeed, but her family life is … sometimes … not so happy.
Jin Su Ji’s grandmother praises everything she does. That makes her younger sister angry and envious and determined to show the family that she can be just as successful. Jin Su Ji does not want friction in their relationship and does her best to smooth things out.
Jin Su Ji’s younger brother has dreams of being a famous entertainer but he is immature and does not have a plan to accomplish his fame. She tries to advise and caution him, but he still gets into trouble, and she has to help him get out of trouble.
Jin Su Ji’s father wants to be a successful businessman but has no business smarts. She cautions him to be careful about his business partners and to check everything they do. He says that he will but unfortunately, he doesn’t. Her mother tells her not to discourage her father. But her advice is wise and he should listen because his bad decisions will not only adversely affect him but the entire family.
Finally, there is Jin Su Ji herself is suffering quietly. Evidently, a trauma happened when she was a little girl and different things can trigger frightening memories. Her friend told her she needed to “doctor herself”. But like most doctors, Jin Su Ji looks out for others but does not look out for herself. Doctors are terrible patients.
Jin Su Ji does not know it but she has met members of Chae U Ri’s family. His sister works for Jin Su Ji as a make-up assistant to prepare her for TV appearances. His mother runs a restaurant and she was invited by her boss to have dinner there.
Chae U Ri’s mother had given Jin Su Ji some treats to take home, not realizing that her gift was linked to a trauma that occurred when Jin Su Ji was a little girl. Jin Su Ji threw the food in the trash right in front of the restaurant. Chae U Ri was on his way home and saw her. Not knowing what she was experiencing he misunderstood her actions.
Chae U Ri confronted Jin Su Ji wanting to know why she was rude and insulting. Jin Su Ji tried to defend her actions but did not explain herself. At that moment the memories were overwhelming her. She became angry and upset with Chae U Ri, not understanding why he was insisting she accept something she did not want!
Chae U Ri viewed her actions as inconsiderate and insulting to his mother and did not even attempt to understand her actions or reactions.
As time passes and their working relationships develop there will likely be more instances of misunderstandings, where they butt heads with each other. But celebrity status is unpredictable. You could be a shining star one day and the next day, fall from grace. That’s what happens to Jin Su Ji, and Chae U Ri decides he wants to help her get through her “dark days”.
Will their relationship develop into romance? This series has 120 episodes and only 13 episodes have aired as of April 12, 2024. Only 107 more episodes to find out the answer.

Viewership and Rating:

- My Drama List: (No rating as of April 12, 2024)
- Redbubble.com: 4.6 out of 5 stars
- Viki viewers rated this series 8.6 out of 10 stars
My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewers.
I have three reasons for watching this series.
- Reason Number 1: I like medical dramas, especially those that touch on mental health issues. Korean dramas in this genre are continuing to grow in popularity. Check out the Medical K- Dramas About Doctors on Amazon Prime.
- Reason Number 2: I was happy to see Ham Eun Jung and Baek Sung Hyun together as a couple onscreen again. The first time I saw them together was in the 2011-2012 historical period drama “Queen Insoo” (or “Insu, The Queen Mother”). The historical K-drama had challenging roles. Playing two doctors in this modern K-drama with its lighthearted moments, must have been refreshing for them.
- Reason Number 3: I enjoyed watching “Unpredictable Family”. So I figured I would enjoy watching “Su Ji and U Ri”.
KOREAN FOOD MENTIONED IN K-DRAMAS:
In “Su Ji and U Ri”, the food gift that caused a misunderstanding between Jin Su Ji and Chae U Ri was rice cakes. It’s a treat often made to celebrate a birthday.
(NOTE: A new hobby of mine: Collecting recipes for foods mentioned in K-dramas. Every now and then a recipe link might be shared via my K-drama reviews. Watch out for them. LOL.)
