What Is Lilly Wachowski’s Next Project About?

Famed director Lilly Wachowski, 50% of the team that created the Matrix movies, has announced her next project…which is pretty far from something as mainstream as The Matrix. In fact you’ll likely only hear about it from websites like this one.

The title is Cassie Workman is Witchy AF, and it’s described as “a new comedic documentary series.” Is it an actual documentary, or a fake one? That is something we can’t tell. Everything that describes it is right on the edge, and it could go either way.

The show is set in a fictional occult bookstore owned by the show’s creator and host, Cassie Workman. Workman is a real person; she’s an Australian comedian, writer, musician and actor. But the press release states she’s playing a fictional version of herself, and since the shop’s not real either, and it’s billed as a comedy, that means this is a fake mockumentary thing, right?

Well. Cassie Workman is Witchy AF will “explore the history and philosophy of occultism and magic,” and cover such topics as “Aleister Crowley, John Dee, the secret history of Hollywood, and Santa Muert,” which were actual things…so is it a documentary after all? But then there’s this…Cassie’s co-host is a puppet, a giant raven in a king’s outfit seen in the picture. The series boasts the involvement of puppetry created by Direct Message and practical SFX make-up from Monster in My Closet (Smile 2, Hocus Pocus).

So if it’s about MAGIC….what kind of magic are we talking about? The kind of “magic” that people like Crowley and Dee thought they could do, or the kind that requires special effects departments and puppet crews? This makes a difference. IF Cassie Workman is Witchy AF is a fantasy mockumentary in the vein of What We Do In The Shadows, sign me up. If it’s just footage of people flipping tarot cards and then nothing happens, count me out.

There;s no word yet on where Cassie Workman is Witchy AF could wind up, or when it could be released. But production just wrapped filming in NYC, and it likely has several months of editing ahead of itself.
