WB To Give Green Lantern Movie Another Shot
To say Warner Bros. has had some trouble getting a DC Movie Universe going is putting it lightly. One of their biggest misfires was the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. It was heavily mocked in the months following its release, but in the wake of more high-profile blunders like Man of Steel and Batman V Superman, everyone has pretty much forgotten the Green Lantern movie. Which gives WB the opening to try it again!
If you remember the great Green Lantern TV series that appeared ever-so-briefly on Cartoon Network four years ago, then you know the concept is packed with space action and adventure that could make for a great movie in the right hands. Do those hands belong to David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes? You tell me — they’re the ones working on the script.
The good news is, Deadline reports this movie will have both Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart — two Lanterns for the price of one ticket. We’re not sure how that works given the rules have generally been “one Space Cop per planet,” but it could work with the right approach. The bad news is….they’re describing that approach as “Lethal Weapon in space.” Realize that one of these guys is white and one is black. Was this the knee-jerk reaction? “Mixed-race cops in space — sounds super wacky! Gotta do the Lethal Weapon thing.” No, you don’t.
Of course, since it just exists as a script now, the movie might not even happen. Or it could take on a different form before it’s completed. Or it could morph into a comedy starring Jack Black. Who knows when it’s WB.
