Ubisoft Confirms Rayman Remake Is In The Works

If you’re a AAA video game publisher in the 2020s and you just released a popular, crowd-pleasing game, what’s the first thing you do? That’s correct…you say it “didn’t meet sales expectations” and you fire the whole team behind it. Ubisoft‘s Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown is the latest victim of this self-destructive strategy.

This time, however, the team who made the game was not exactly “fired.” Ubisoft was quick to release a statement that said most of them have been shuffled into the group endlessly trying to make Beyond Good And Evil 2 happen, while the remainder have been sent to work on….a Rayman remake. This was the first public mention of such a thing.

The original 1995 Rayman is arguably the game that first made the world sit up and take notice of the French studio in the first place and eventually turned them into the powerhouse they are today. But is Ubisoft as it is capable of making a game like this again, even if all they really have to do is copy what their predecessors have already done? I get the sense Ubi could only remake Rayman if it was an open-world 3D “game as a service” where you mainly climbed towers and bought microtransaction doodads.

The original Rayman is a single-player platformer with lush art directed by Michel Ancel, where you play as a limbless dude trying to rescue fairies from cages. The game gets pretty difficult in its latter stages, especially by modern standards. We’re not sure what a remake would really entail, or if it would change anything, but Ubi says Ancel has been brought back as a consultant….a controversial move as before he left the studio in 2020, he was accused of fostering a toxic workplace.

There hasn’t been a Rayman game on the market since Rayman Legends in 2013. Above all else we do want to see him again, even if Ubisoft will inevitably claim he “didn’t meet sales expectations” one month after he returns.

YESSS! A Rayman remake? About time! I poured countless hours into the original back in 1995. The funky music, the wacky characters, the limbless wonder himself – it was pure platforming bliss. Sure, it might be brutal by today's standards, but that's part of the charm! I'm just hoping Ubisoft doesn't mess it up. Can you imagine them turning it into some open-world, microtransaction-laden mess? Ugh. Let's keep it classic – tight controls, gorgeous visuals, and maybe some quality-of-life improvements for difficulty spikes. Bringing back Michel Ancel as a consultant is a double-edged sword. His creative vision is undeniable, but the workplace allegations are concerning. Here's hoping they can leverage his talent without the baggage. Either way, I'm cautiously optimistic. A faithful remake of the original Rayman would be a dream come true!

The original Rayman was brilliant – a breath of fresh air in the platforming scene. Can Ubisoft recapture that magic? Knowing them, it'll be riddled with microtransactions and shoved into some "live service" model. Remember that awful mobile Rayman game with loot boxes? Yeah, that's where my trust level is at.

I never played the original, but I've heard great things. A remake could be a good way to introduce this classic to a whole new generation of gamers. Of course, it all depends on how Ubisoft handles it. A faithful recreation with some modern tweaks could be fantastic. But if they go overboard with monetization or change the core gameplay, then it's a recipe for disaster for its old school fans.

This is fantastic news! I’ve been missing those creative platforming challenges and unique art style. I just hope they don’t overcomplicate it or add unnecessary features. A faithful remake with modern enhancements would be perfect

I’m a bit worried. Ubisoft’s track record with remakes and reboots hasn’t been great. I hope they don’t ruin a classic with poor design choices or excessive monetization. I’d rather they focus on original games instead of rehashing old ones

A great opportunity for speedrunners. I wonder if they'll add any new challenges or secrets. I can't wait to see what the speedrunning community does with it.
