Yes, The TMNT Are Meeting Godzilla — And More

IDW Publishing. stewards of the TMNT comic license for many years now, revealed their plans at SDCC for the next few months…the largest, quite literally, being the mashup between the Ninja Turtles and Godzilla.

It’s no exaggeration to say that by this point the Turtles have met quite a few characters outside of their own continuity, but I’m not complaining here. The only real question is why they didn’t meet the King of the Monsters sooner. I also have no need to know why this is happening so long as it is, but here’s the official explanation: “It’s revealed the Foot Clan exists to stop the onslaught of kaiju attacks, but Shredder and General Krang have different plans to give mutagen a giant upgrade.”

TMNT x Godzilla, which goes on sale in November, was scripted by Tim Seeley, creator of Cassie Hack (there’s another character the TMNT need to meet) and illustrated by Fero Pe, who’s drawn a lot of these crossovers.

In other news, the regular TMNT book will get a creative turnover starting with issue #13 as Eisner-winning writer Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese) and artist Freddie E. Williams II (the TMNT crossovers Fero Pe didn’t draw) will take over from Jason Aaron and Juan Ferrerya. The description for issue 13 is rather vague and could mean anything: “The Heroes in a Half-Shell are back together and hopeful about the future of the city, but there’s a dark and personal danger lurking in the shadows as a deadly new assassin makes their debut.”

There will also be a new five-part Turtles mini that goes on sale around the same time as TMNT x Godzilla. It’s a new Battle Nexus adventure, where the Turtles face off against tough dudes like the original Mirage Studios Shredder, Metalhead from the 2012 animated series, a resurrected Slash and the IDW debut of Ninjara. There’s a long list of writers and artists behind this one:  Tom Waltz, Paul Allor, Sophie Campbell, Caleb Goellner, and Erik Burnham all contributed to the script and the Escorza brothers, Ben Bishop, Vitor Cafaggi, Omar Francia, and Hendry Prasetya collaborated on the art.

I grew up on both TMNT and Godzilla, so seeing them in a crossover is kind of unreal for me. I’ve always felt like Godzilla belonged in a different type of universe, but now that they’re mixing with the Turtles, I realize it makes more sense than I expected. I mean, both have dealt with mutation, secret science, and destruction in cities. Also, having Shredder and Krang turn kaiju attacks into a mutagen opportunity feels very believable in this universe. I’m especially excited that Tim Seeley is writing it—his stuff is always fun without being too goofy.

And Gene Luen Yang on the main TMNT book? That’s a great choice. His work on “American Born Chinese” was smart and emotional, and if he brings that kind of heart to the Turtles, we might get stories that go deeper than just action. Plus, I love that they’re bringing back Ninjara and Slash. Slash is underrated and always brings chaos.

Honestly, IDW is really giving TMNT fans a feast right now. I’m definitely picking these up when they hit shelves.

I like both franchises, but this feels like another attempt to grab attention by smashing big names together. I’m not against crossovers, but they work best when there’s a strong narrative reason. “Because Shredder wants bigger monsters” doesn’t really impress me.

That said, I’ll keep an open mind. Tim Seeley is a solid writer, and he’s handled weird premises before. Maybe he’ll pull it off.

As for the new main series direction, I’m cautiously optimistic. Gene Luen Yang is a good writer, but TMNT needs consistency. IDW’s had talent, but the tone keeps changing. I hope Yang sticks around longer than a few issues.

I only started reading comics a year ago, and TMNT was my first series. I didn’t grow up with the cartoons, so I’m discovering everything now. Seeing names like Godzilla and Shredder together just sounds fun to me. It feels like the comic world has fewer rules than movies or shows. You can just have things like this happen!

I don’t know all the characters in the new Battle Nexus story, but it’s exciting that they’re bringing different versions of Shredder and even someone called Ninjara. I might have to Google some of these, but that’s part of the fun.
