Godzilla Is Invading The Odyssey Now

When Christopher Nolan’s version of The Odyssey hits theaters this summer, IDW will be counter-programming with their own version of the classic fable…one where Godzilla shows up. Yes, this is real.

The story as you know it: after winning the Trojan War, King Odysseus and his army sets sail for home…but along the way he mutilates a cyclops (totally in self-defense!) and that cyclops turns out to be friends with Poseidon, who sends all manner of hazards after Odysseus as punishment. So how do you fit Godzilla into this? One would assume he’s another obstacle to get past.

But that’s not what writer Frank Tieri and illustrator Ilias Kyriazis cooked up. Godzilla is actually Odysseus’ ally in this tale, and he fights the monsters alongside him. …Wait, doesn’t that change the dyanmic of the story significantly? It’s supposed to be an epic, a struggle for survival. With Godzilla on your side, is your victory ever in question? Tieri and Kyriazis say to balance things out, there will be monsters “even more powerful than the Titans” in their way. Seems Poseidon expected this and came prepared!

Homer’s The Odyssey is widely considered to be the greatest epic of all time. So, how could you possibly make it more epic? Fill it with kaiju, that’s how. Odysseus’ journey home was already challenging enough, but what if instead of storms, sirens, and cyclopes, the gods sent monsters even more powerful than the titans? And what if Zeus sent the most powerful one of all to assist the king on his odyssey? It’s like Homer said: “Of all creatures that breathe and move upon the earth, nothing is bred that is stronger than Godzilla.”

The full title of this book is actually Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Godzilla’s The Odyssey, making us wonder if more books like it are on the way (and if Cookie Monster is involved). And now we want a Godzilla / Cookie Monster team-up. Make it happen, IDW! From everything you HAVE made happen, don’t tell us you can’t do it…we won’t believe you.
