Taki Udon is a retro gaming YouTuber who founded his own clone console company last year. He’s introducing a new line of machines called “Retro Remake,” starting with a fully functional, FPGA-powered PlayStation clone called the SuperStation One. Though PS1 clones aren’t rare anymore, this part is: the SuperStation is starting at a price of just $150.
For an FPGA machine — a more accurate form of console cloning than emulation — $150 is pretty darn cheap. However, the price will only apply to the first batch of them, and only to preorders — which open tomorrow. That doesn’t leave a lot of time to ponder on the decision, but….
The SuperStation is based around open-source MiSTer FPGA code, which means it will probably be able to play games from more systems than just the original PlayStation. Physically, though, it’s built for those whose favorite console is the PS1 — it has ports for PS1 memory cards and controllers, as well as more modern functions and conveniences like USB, NFC, wifi, Bluetooth, and SNAC support. There will be a CD attachment in the near future that lets you use actual discs and not ISOs — you can preorder it on the same day for five additional dollars.
There’s one leg-up on the competition that the SuperStation offers, and that’s compatibility with PS1-era televisions. It has composite outputs so you can plug it into a CRT if you have one, and get the 100% retro experience. Competing clones like the Analogue line do not have this feature out of the box — you have to filter them into a CRT signal through some external device! Plus, they cost more.
The regular price of the SuperStation One will be $225, so if you desire the discount, park yourself at the Retro Remake site and get ready. Preorders open tomorrow, January 25 at 6 PM Pacific / 9 PM Eastern.
