- Memorable Quote: “But if my lie enhances God’s truthfulness and increases His glory, then why am I judged like a sinner?”
SUMMARY: Residents of a decaying apartment complex fall prey to a dangerous pseudo-religious cult. As fanaticism spreads, one man must confront the consequences of his actions and fight to save his family from the madness overtaking their home.
♦ In Villa Wonjeong, Faith Spreads Faster Than Fear
In “The Unrighteous”, the storyline unfolds inside a dilapidated apartment complex whose residents dream of redevelopment and the financial salvation it promises. Joo-Hyeon is a gentle, overworked young man juggling multiple burdens. He cares for his ailing mother and niece while working as a bank security guard and studying to become a real estate agent. All of the neighbors are cordial and friendly, and he gets along with them. All except Shin-Hye. He is suspicious of her and was warned that she might try to get him into a pseudo-religious group, a cult. He heeded the warning. But his elderly mother believes in the church of deaconess Shin-Hye and the preacher Mun-Su.
Shin-Hye is deeply entangled with the cult, and her obsession quickly spreads. Her newfound “faith” becomes a weapon—one she uses to manipulate the residents of Villa Wonjeong. The cult’s teachings prey on the tenants’ shared longing for redevelopment, promising prosperity, healing, and rebirth. Soon, the belief metastasizes into a community-wide delusion. Neighbors who once exchanged polite greetings now gather in secret meetings, whispering about signs, miracles, and divine promises.
Joo-Hyeon is horrified when he discovers that even his own mother has been drawn into the cult. Ordinary people, including his mother, who were once rational and grounded, descend into paranoia, zealotry, and even violence. It’s the horror of mass manipulation. Joo-Hyeon is considered “The Enemy”, but he becomes the reluctant hero. He summons his courage and confronts not only Shin-Hye’s escalating madness but also the collective hysteria consuming his home. Joo-Hyeon fights desperately and bravely to protect his family.
“The Unrighteous” ultimately delivers a chilling portrait of how ordinary people can be swallowed by extraordinary darkness—especially when that darkness promises material comfort and salvation.
