Uglies, a film adaptation of Scott Westerfeld‘s bestselling 2005 novel, is poised to resonate with audiences through its timely exploration of beauty standards. Starring Joey King, fresh off her successful Kissing Booth trilogy, the film has the potential to be a game-changer for the struggling YA genre. After the box office dominance of The Hunger Games, the subsequent years have seen a decline in the popularity of young adult adaptations. Could Uglies be the revival the genre desperately needs?
The film is a fitting reflection of our increasingly superficial society, obsessed with youth and appearance. From the rise of plastic surgery trends among young people to the obsession with anti-aging products, the novel’s premise of a world where beauty is enforced through surgery feels eerily prescient. The Uglies centers around Tally Youngblood (Joey King), a girl living in a future where a mandatory operation transforms teenagers into idealized versions of beauty. You will notice people look like walking Instagram filters in the world of this story. If this Succeeds we may have sequels because the book trilogy leads to 8 books.
Uglies Official Trailer
On the surface, this world is a utopian paradise where everyone is stunning and perpetually entertained. Tally initially believes she’s found perfection, a world of endless parties and technological marvels. However, a sinister truth lurks beneath this facade. The government’s promise of beauty is a deceptive mask for a chilling reality: the erosion of individuality, creativity, and free will. Once transformed, citizens become compliant puppets, easily swayed by propaganda. The operation not only alters appearance but also manipulates minds, creating a submissive population.
Tally’s world is turned upside down when she discovers a secret society of rebels who refuse to conform. Faced with a life-altering decision, she must choose between societal acceptance and personal freedom. Will she embrace the “perfect” image at the cost of her soul, or fight to preserve her free will?
Uglies arrives on Netflix September 13, 2024.
