The Ninja Turtles Are About To Meet The Stranger Things Kids
If there’s one sentence I never expected to type in my lifetime, “official crossover between Ninja Turtles and Stranger Things” is certainly it. Up to this point any comic offshoot of the popular TV series (the latter one) has been strictly canon, often to the detriment of the comics themselves. They often explore nooks and crannies of the existing seasons that aren’t as interesting as the main events and feature barely any of the familiar cast. Was there ever a demand for a miniseries set entirely in Russia that explains how a Demogorgon got there? No, there was not. Give us Eleven, you cowards.
I guess Dark Horse not only listened to me, they read the dark recesses of my subconscious and pulled out a thing I never would have even asked for because it seemed impossible: a comic that not only features the beloved Hawkins Six, but four mutated turtles in bandanas. They’re teaming up with IDW and they’re actually going to do this. If I ever had an urge to shout “COWABUNGA” out loud, it’s now. I want this badly.
So what kind of circumstances brought them together? The Turtles don’t stay very far from the New York sewers and the ST kids very rarely get the chance to leave Indiana, let alone the borders of their own town. The official story is that they’ve “taken a trip” to NYC…but how? Where are their parents? …Who cares? The important thing is that we get to the point where Dustin is being chased by Foot Clan soldiers and El and Mike (the turtle Mike) are chowing down on waffle pizza.
Did the Ninja Turtles even exist in the time Stranger Things takes place in? Just barely. The first comic book from Eastman and Laird was introduced in 1984, the same year Max joined the crew and Dustin raised a pet Demodog. The cover below looks like the 1985 version of the characters, so…Turtles would be a thing, apparently in real life.
“It feels incredible to be the artist of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Stranger Things,” says Fero Pe, artist for IDW’s regular Ninja Turtles series as well as this one. “For the art on this project, I wanted to do something unique, inspired by the era when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created and the setting of the Stranger Things series. It’s a style close to the first Turtles comics from Mirage. I hope that the fans of both worlds enjoy it very much!”
Below are all the covers that have been revealed so far for this glorious team-up. The first issue will go on sale July 12.
