This just in: Jack Black has been called forth to play all the video game characters that Chris Pratt isn’t playing. The long-in-development Minecraft movie has picked him up to play Steve, the lead character and one of two people you can be in the game (the other’s Alex, the girl). The casting comes hot off Black’s performance as Bowser in the Super Mario Bros Movie.
As Bowser, Black delivered a passionate ballad of unrequited love for the princess he frequently kidnaps, called “Peaches.” As Steve, Black will perform the ditty…..uh, actually, what would Steve sing? What would Steve DO? Who even IS Steve? He’s got the blankest slate of any video game character I can think of, except for the yellow square in Atari’s 1978 game “Adventure.”
I guess they’ll have to figure something out. The Minecraft movie does not have a reported writer, and I hope for their sake they aren’t seriously putting it off for the last minute. Everything else is set up to go. All the other major roles have already been filled, with Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) directing, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen cast and Jason Momoa rumored to be in talks.
This is not the first video game movie of Black’s and it’s not the last either: he has already been filmed for a role in the Borderlands movie that releases later this year.
