The Comic Book ‘Powers’ Is Being Adapted Again, This Time As A Cartoon

“Powers,” the long-running superhero crime drama by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Oeming, is coming to television…again. After a live-action adaptation of this comic failed to gain traction ten years ago, B & O are willing to give it another shot…this time in animated form.

If you don’t recall “Powers” ever being a show before, there’s a reason for that. Back in 2015, when the market for streaming television was first opening up, one of the early participants was…Playstation 3. The misguided idea was that if you owned a PS3 you could not just play video games, but see exclusive scripted content, because this was back when console makers believed consumers wanted a video game machine to do everything but play games.

But it turned out people WEREN’T looking to the PS3 for TV shows, and the few projects they had going were ignored and were eventually all cancelled. “Powers” was one of the few that made it out, and it actually got to two seasons.

“Powers” is about Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, two Chicago cops who take on cases involving people with superpowers. The series has been running off and on for 25 years now, starting in 2000 at Image, moving to Marvel, and currently published through Dark Horse.

Bendis is writing the scripts for the animated “Powers” series, with Oeming handling visual development. The series is now in pre-production at Netflix; no one knows yet when it will see release or if it will at all.

It’s interesting to see "Powers" getting another chance, especially as a cartoon. The comic had such a unique take on the superhero genre, so I’m hopeful this adaptation will do it justice. Do you think the animated format will make a difference in how the story is received?

Finally some good news for Powers fans. The live action one never got the budget or attention it needed. Animation makes way more sense for all the crazy superpower stuff anyway. Bendis writing it himself is a big plus. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Netflix actually finishes it and doesn’t cancel after one season like they do with everything.

Powers as a cartoon? That sounds perfect. Superhero crime stories always look better when you can show the powers without worrying about CGI costs blowing up the budget. Bendis knows these characters inside out so the scripts should be solid. I’m actually excited for this one.
