Since the first Avengers film hit in 2012, fans have known that Thanos was coming. He was brought in to be the culmination of three “Phases” worth of films, and he’s been teased in many of them. Including have a side role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. And now, via Avengers: Infinity War, he’s going to be front and center for the battle that’s coming. And for The Russo Brothers, who are directing the film and its sequel, they have one big goal for Thanos: Make him like Darth Vader.
How so? Well, for many, what made the original Star Wars films so epic was that Vader was this unstoppable force of sorts, and that resounded throughout the generations. And they’re going for that here in Infinity War:
“Darth Vader was the pre-eminent villain of my childhood, and we’re hoping to make a Darth Vader for a new generation,” said Russo to Comic Book Movie. “We’re hoping he has that complexity to him, and that he strikes fear into the heart of the audience, but at the same time they go on a journey with him. Frankly, Avengers 3 is his movie.”
To prove this, he reiterated that in an unreleased scene, Thanos destroys a moon:
“That’s one of many things Thanos does in this film. He’s an incredible threat!”
Infinity War will release on May 4th.
