Here’s something no one brought up during SDCC: the release date for Squid Game Season 2. For some reason Netflix had this in their pockets the whole time but neglected to reveal it until after the event was over. Perhaps they wanted our full attention and didn’t want to share it with Amazon or Marvel or anyone else? Whatever their motive was, they picked today and only today to release a letter from Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of Squid Game, on the return of his series — which is happening within 2024.
The first season of Squid Game was an unexpected hit for Netflix, who had been investing in Korean shows but expected them to remain niche. The massive success of the battle royale paved the way for other K-dramas like Extraordinary Attorney Woo to reach a large US audience. Initially thought of as a limited series, Dong-hyuk now faces the problem of coming up with more AFTER killing off most of his characters.
How’s he gonna do it? The man still provided few actual hints in his letter, but did say Seong Gi-hun, aka 456, would be re-entering the game as part of his plan of revenge. To us, that doesn’t sound smart. Wouldn’t it be safer to plan the demise of the Squid Game from the outside, where the cameras and guns are pointed away from him?

Dong-hyuk not only confirmed the street date of Season 2 but revealed a Season 3 as well, and mentioned it would be the final season. He has a complete road map now; the trilogy will complete itself sometime in 2025. Assuming Stranger Things can get its final season out that year, and Cobra Kai finally airs its remaining episodes, that is going to be one packed year of finales for the streamer. And after that, then what?
Squid Game Season 2 drops December 26 on Netflix.
